Dr. Elliot Said

Dr. Elliot Said

Born in London to Egyptian refugee parents, Elliot, an only child, assumed the weight of his parents' high expectations early on and devoted his life to becoming the best doctor possible as a way to make them proud. Despite the fact that he was frankly brilliant and breezed through school, that approval never quite came - especially not when Elliot started dating his first boyfriend in high school and his parents categorically did not approve. Always a little awkward and temperamental, over the years Elliot grew more and more distant from his family as he realized that their expectations were unattainable and their love conditional. Elliot moved out for college and found himself alone in the world.   It was while working as a cybernetics resident at The Royal London Hospital in early 2024 that Elliot met a social worker named David Cooper. David had come to the emergency department escorting a little boy removed from an abusive home and ended up staying at the hospital for several days until the child was released; during this time, he and Elliot struck up a conversation and David's intelligence, sweetness, and utter dedication to his job won Elliot over and he asked David out a week later. They were married in May 2026.   The next two years were the happiest of Elliot's life. Upon finishing med school with honors, he stayed on at RLH and threw himself into his work alongside long-time med school friend and colleague Rachel Greene. Inspired by David's work, Elliot took a special interest in pediatric patients and the unique challenges presented by working with cyberware on a child-sized scale. Also, he found that he could connect with kids in a way that he had to work much harder at with adults - his sarcasm flew right over children's heads and they tended to find his grumpiness entertaining and in response, Elliot began to mellow. He and David began to discuss adopting a child of their own.   On September 29, 2028, a primary school in London was bombed, the target of a small-scale domestic terrorist group. The school was one of a half-dozen on David's service in his role as a school social worker and that Friday he was onsite. He survived the first explosion, staying in the building to assist with the evacuation of the children. Elliot, having been notified at the hospital, managed to arrive on the scene just as the second explosion detonated, bringing down the rest of the building. Most of the children made it out safely, but David, along with eight of his colleagues, did not.   Elliot made it through the next few weeks on autopilot, returning to work only a few days after the funeral and keeping grueling hours. Rachel finally intervened after he began snapping at patients and missing obvious details in his work - she could see the cracks spiderwebbing across his facade. This backfired - Elliot saw her talking to their department head as an attack on his competence. He lost it, screaming at her about her betrayal and storming out of the hospital, quitting his job for good.   More isolated than he'd been since his undergrad days, Elliot went dark for a few weeks, only leaving home whenever strictly necessary. Finally, David's brother reached out to him. John lived in the Milanese suburb of Corsico and knew that the area, still recovering from years of military occupation, was looking for medical professionals of all kinds. Elliot considered the offer for a few days and decided that if he didn't get out of London, he was likely going to lose his mind. He packed up, sold the house he and David had purchased together, and moved to Italy without a word to anyone.   On arrival in Corsico, he was able to rent an office space and attached apartment on Liberty Plaza, across the street from 44 Via Armando Diaz, and set up a practice, consisting of himself and a receptionist/bookkeeper/general life organizer Arin Janes. His work was less specialized now - although Elliot was still known as a specialist in pediatric cyberware, he saw patients of all ages who needed his expertise. By 2030, his reputation as the best doctor of cybernetics in the area was solidified, which brought newly-arrived Athena to his office for a check-up on her cyber eyes. At first, he found Athena to be a little exhausting - Elliot was fairly certain he talked more in one conversation with her than he had in the year and a half since his arrival in Corsico. But month after month she kept coming back and slowly he retracted the claws, finding in her an intellectual equal. After consulting on a case for Faust & Whitmore Private Investigations , the two formed a genuine friendship and began spending time together outside of their respective work contexts.   In mid-2031, Elliot contracted Athena to do some Netrunning for him on John's behalf. Now living on the far side of Milan, John was doing some digging into his former corporate employers and had contacted Elliot for assistance in getting into the company's data storage archives in Corsico. Athena was able to retrieve the information but got zapped by a security program in the process. Elliot, upset at having unintentionally put her in harm's way, realized he'd fallen for her at some point over the previous year. In typical fashion, this confession of feelings resulted in both of them nearly talking themselves out of kissing the other until they finally managed to get out of their own way. David's death is still a little too raw for Elliot to really want to pursue a serious relationship with Athena at this time, but he knows he cares for her a great deal, and she is content with that.   He does not, however, care for her colleagues at F&W. Elliot generally regards Faust as a reckless menace to society, although he has grudgingly come to accept that she does care devotedly about Athena. Equally grudging is his acceptance that Lincoln fills a necessary niche in the medical services world, though he does not care for his methods - or his personality. At best, the Chaos Twins are an irritation to be tolerated (though he can be somewhat softer on the subject of Faust when circumstances prompt it) and at worst, they're actively hazardous to Athena's well-being. Falcon has garnered slightly more respect, although Elliot has not interacted with him sufficiently to form much more of an opinion other than "anyone who can wrangle Faust is good with me."   Athena's presence in his life has softened some of the edges sharpened by his recent trauma and isolation and, mostly as a way to honor David's memory, Elliot has recently started volunteering twice a month at the local children's clinic. No one knows about this except Athena, and she only knows because she saw the paperwork on his desk.  He brushed off her questions and said only that it was something he felt like he needed to do.   ------   Cyberware: Elliot doesn’t have any visible cyberware. His natural eyes have been enhanced via nanosurgery, giving him better overall vision and limited low-light/night vision, and he has a full suite of healing and anti-disease nanobots to keep him from catching anything from his patients. He’s also had a neural bridge put in, making him ambidextrous.
