Maria Drewniak originally hails from Poland, though she came over as a very young child and has very little memory of her country of origin. She works as a maid at Lewiston House, a job that requires sometimes-inconvenient hours and certainly isn’t one of the best-paying around. However, the owner’s careful scrutiny of the renters means that the working conditions are somewhat higher than at a place where all the owners are concerned about is payment. Maria is devoted to her maternal grandmother, who tells her stories; as a result of these stories, Maria could well recognize unusual occurrences.
