The Royal Family, and the five aristocratic families control the upper crust. The Kraken Gang controls the criminal underworld. Numerous guilds affect the various trades in the city.

History

Velsia was settled 470 years ago by the reign of King Tawley (5th) after the defeat of the Jadini tribe who called the Coriana Gulf home. It was chosen for strategic reasons due to its location between the gulf and the Rudlan Mountains. The city, named after the Goddess Velsi, grew in size steadily as merchants and sailors came to find work. A massive fire known as the Eastport Inferno destroyed much of the poorest parts of the city 340 years ago, but those areas have been rebuilt and virtually no signs of the blaze can be seen still.

Architecture

Stone from the granite rich Rudlan Mountains is used for much of the higher-class and military buildings, while the lower class buildings are made mostly of winewood from the nearby Red River forest and clay found in the Velsian delta. Stone and clay buildings are often painted in reds, yellows and blues by artists in town, and some more wealthy citizens have murals commissioned as well.

Geography

Much of the city is shore-front on the gulf or the Red River which runs through the west side of the city. Grassland and converted farmlands surround the city.
