Nettle Lake (Town)

The largest town in the Union, it leads its neighbors in political and economic power

Nettle Lake, the town, sits on the western shore of Nettle Lake proper, and serves as the de facto capital of the Coralous Union, despite there being no official declaration thereof. With the birth of the Union in the aftermath of the Fall of New Coralous, leaders from around the area have come to use Nettle Lake as a common ground to meet and discuss business.   While Nettle Lake employs a good number of fishermen taking advantage of the plenitude of freshwater fish, the town now serves primarily as a travel hub and trade center for the entire Union, growing faster than any other settlement on the island since the fall of New Coralous. From the city docks, riverboats travel up and down the Coralous River, providing transport to goods and people along the waterway, while a half-dozen roads connect Nettle Lake to the smaller towns all around the Union.

Industry & Trade

Unsurprisingly, the bulk of Nettle Lake's industry is in mercantilism. Some large manufacturers operate their businesses inside the city itself, but most raw goods are shipped into the city as they make their way along the trade routes across the Union.

History

As the most centralized city in the Union, Nettle Lake originally grew from a simple fishing village into a busy hub thanks to its reputation as a way station for both east-west travel along the trade roads and north-south travel along the Coralous River. When New Coralous fell to the sahuagin, many survivors fled directly upriver and took shelter at Nettle Lake, thanks to the abundance of flop houses and other temporary accommodations already in place.   The flood of survivors brought more than just hungry survivors, though. Merchants and the servants of fallen nobles were left without their fortunes or former masters, meaning that a majority of the educated populace ended up in the small town, hungry to prove themselves, and ready to seize on the new opportunities presented by the power vacuum. It wasn't long at all before Abel Knox started reaching out to the various settlements around the island, laying the groundwork for the Coralous Union .
