The Red Blade Mercenaries

Under the banner of Iomedae, the Red Blade Mercenaries march behind Captain Yzerman. They serve as a protective militia for towns, organizations, or even individuals that can afford their prices, providing the only widespread protection in the Coralous Union outside of the gates of the individual settlements.

Structure

The Red Blade is run by Captain Yzerman with the help of his "Command Staff," a group of six highly trusted veterans and administrators. From there, the remainder of the organization is grouped into semi-independent "squads" of mercenaries, usually between 4-6 members, designed to compliment each other's skills. When working in tandem on larger operations, a single squad leader will be selected by the to be the operation commander, with all other squad leaders considered equally subordinate to them. Captain Yzerman and his staff occasionally take part in particularly important jobs, automatically assuming the position of operation commander when they do, but they generally keep to the main headquarters or branch offices.

Assets

Nearly 300 fighters, explorers, and magic users count themselves among the ranks of the Red Blades, living and working in locations all across the Coralous Union. There are major branch offices in Riverbend, Arboris, and Haven, as well as smaller outposts in many of the further flung locations of the Union. The main headquarters, serving as both barracks and training grounds, sits on the north-west side of Nettle Lake, and houses almost a third of the troupe at any given time.
While members are expected to provide their own arms and equipment, the organization has craftsmen on hand in all of the major offices to help with maintenance and repair of Red Blade gear. Additionally, whenever a large operation is taking place, participants from all squads are given white or red tabards with the Red Blade crest for identification.

History

After retiring from the Nettle Lake City Guard, Captain Yzerman sought to establish a Union-wide protective service that could provide protection to Union citizens who operated outside of the relative safety of the larger towns.
Using his clout with the people of the Union, he purchased the ownership of a small group of freelance caravan guards, adding the Sword of Iomedea to their existing "winged shield and wheel" banner, and renaming them into the Red Blade Mercenaries. In time, more and more people were drawn to the Captain's cause, eventually expanding the organization from a band of roving sellswords into a small army that spanned the land.
