Trouble in Miller's Bend - Part 3

Session 3 Recap

General Summary

Following the directions provided by the apprehended member of Verant's gang, the party heads upriver until they locate the camp where the troublemakers have been staying. The party launches a surprise attack on the disorganized group, and a short but intense battle later the gang is scattered into the countryside. After checking the handful of prisoners left under the party's control, however, they discover that Verant is nowhere to be found, having apparently left the camp prior to the party arriving with a handful of his close associates.   The party starts interrogating the remaining members, all of whom turn out to be sons of merchants and other well-to-do members of Nettle Lake, who admit to being approached by Verant personally back in town. He offered to fund some "harmless debauchery" as long as they agreed to work for him for a few weeks, smuggling weapons and armor to other places in the Union. The concept seems odd, as there are no existing laws or restrictions for buying, selling, or shipping weapons within the Union, but when the party tries pressing the boys for further information, they reveal that nobody but Verant himself knew the goal of the plan - they were just along for the "fun."   With no further leads to follow, and having accomplished their original goal, the party helps themselves to the valuables around the camp, then forces their prisoners to haul the remaining armaments back to Miller's Bend to be turned over to the authorities for investigation. Constable Travert meets up with the party back at the inn, taking custody of the boys and their cargo while Andrew Sandberg thanks the group for their efforts, especially without resorting to lethal action. He notes that it isn't uncommon for young men of the merchant class to sneak out to smaller villages around Nettle Lake to blow off steam, it was only this group, emboldened by Verant's protection, that got out of hand enough to warrant outside aid.   As thanks, he hands over a small pouch of gold, donated from the grateful coffers of the hamlet residents, alongside the gratitude of the people of Miller's Bend. As the group makes ready to leave, Travert promises to look into the smuggling operation and tells the party that he will send word should he turn up anything of interest. With the people of Miller's Bend once more at peace, and their mission accomplished, the party heads back home to Nettle Lake enjoy the fruits of their labors.
