Kell Settlement in Candle'Bre | World Anvil

Kell

The People of the Ten Tribes do not take kindly to outsiders tramping through their hills, and while they have little need for formalized settlements, the creation of the Trading Post of Kell was seen as a necessary compromise. A place where they could greet outsiders and possibly trade with them. A place where the various Tribal Leaders could gather to discuss the comings and doings of the Realm.   Given that Kellen pottery is in high demand, and the services of their War Bands even more highly sought after, the small trading post quickly grew into a thriving town, and the only town of note inside Kellen lands. Members of the Ten Tribes tend to live in isolated farmsteads, which are barely subsistence-level since the soil is so poor, and they only gather when there is a specific need for it.   The average citizen of the Basin would have little need to go to the Trading Post of Kell. About the only people it attracts are pottery merchants and those looking to hire Kellen Free Swords, so the town doesn't offer much in the way of amenities.

Prominent People & Places

Krovac's Inn

Krovac is an aging Kellen Warrior who wears his numerous scars and his eye patch with pride. Though he doesn't speak of it often, he fought in the Great War and served alongside Braal of Kell. The Inn is a simple Longhouse design. Mead is imported from nearby Griggor's Steading, the food is simple, but well prepared and the rooms are spartan but clean.   Travelers to the area will find a modestly-stocked general store and a surprisingly well-provisioned apocathacry, but not much else. If they do business in these places, unless they are of Kellen ancestry, they will be served, but there will be no banter. No small talk. The Kellens would just as soon that visitors do what they came to do as quickly as possible and depart.

Plot Threads

Again, unless you have a Kellen in your group, there’s very little to recommend a Kellen campaign setting. The Basalt Mine is (or could be) a strong lure for Warlock players, but unless you plan on centering your entire campaign around the mine, and especially if you don’t have a Kellen in your group, there’s no compelling reason to set a campaign here.   Now, if you do have a barbarian in your group, Kell could, and probably should be a central fixture in your campaign and you'll find that the town has much more to offer than first meets the eye, but more than any other region in the Basin, this one’s suitability as a campaign setting depends on the classes your players select for themselves.   Note: This "much more to offer" has been intentionally left vague to allow each DM to customize this waypoint to their heart's content. For the most part though, Kell should be seen as a fairly inhospitable, not very welcoming place.

Other Notes
Followers of Reyhue & Laernan may be able to secure free lodgings in the Temple of Kell. High charisma followers of Reyhue & Laernan will be able to negotiate down to standard prices. Everybody else is pretty much doomed to fail sans magic, and using magic against the Kellens is probably...unwise.
