The Silver River

The Basics

Flowing languidly into the Loch from the west, the Silver River is tremendously important for two reasons. First, it provides more water to Loch Laern than any other single source. Second, it's vital to trade. Without it, settlement of the Western Lands would have been difficult indeed. Third, it is an incredibly important strategic asset. It is the second most important body of water in the Basin, behind only the Loch itself.   Generally speaking the lands south of the river are of lower elevation than the land north of it, so when it floods (and it does from time to time), the people living on the south bank tend to get the worst of it. This also has the side effect of making the southern shores more fertile, and in the days of the Last King, the provinces bordering the Silver River to the south were indeed some of the most productive in the entire Kingdom.   Its importance in trade and settlement aside, however, the Silver River is also home to one of the Basin’s great, benevolent spirits, the Enchantress of the Silver River, whose presence predates the Basin itself. In fact, ancient stories of Kell tell of a kindly River Spirit known to Reyhue and Laernan, although back in those days, she wasn’t as revered as she is today. The stories say that the Enchantress lives in a crystal palace somewhere beneath the water, although hundreds, or perhaps even thousands of men have gone diving in search of it, only to come up disappointed.   In any case, if you mean to travel any distance at all into the western part of the Basin, the Silver River almost certainly figures prominently into your plans.   The Free Folk of Trentare pray to the Enchantress almost as regularly as they pray to Kaylaar (and the Goddess of Magic does not seem to mind this). As such, the Trentans are fiercely protective of the river and although normally slow to anger, will shed blood at even the suggestion of harm to the clear waters, and now, they have the might of the Furies behind them, too.

Other than the River and the Enchantress who calls it home, none.

Plot Threads

It would be possible to base an entire campaign around the Silver River and/or the Enchantress but it would probably work best if you had a Warlock in the group whose Patron was the Enchantress.   For example, I could absolutely see a long running campaign growing out of the idea that one day, quite out of the blue, the normally crystal-clear waters of the Silver River run muddy, and eventually, run red, with the appearance of blood. Fish begin to die, and the land begins to sicken.   Suddenly, it’s a race to find out what’s causing the damage to the river, tracing it back to its source and meeting an ever-escalating series of challenges, culminating in a final showdown for the soul of the River and to save the weakening Enchantress. That could be a super cool campaign for the right group!
