The Ten Tribes of Kell

The Basics

Kell is a hard land. It produces hard, uncompromising people. During the very worst of the fighting, the tooth and claw battle for the survival of humanity in the Basin, it was the People of the Ten Tribes, the Kellens, who gave more than any other group, and the most savage fighting in the Great War occurred in the rugged and unforgiving hills of Kell. Two promises were made before the titanic battle that spanned several days.   The Dark God promised that he would end the Kellen People. That by the time the fighting ended, there would not be enough Kellens alive even to populate a small village. For his part, Braal of Kell promised that the hills of his birth would break the Nilroggi Horde. That even if the massed humans lost here and were forced to retreat, the casualties they inflicted on the Horde would be such that it would never recover.   Braal was right.   In the thick of that fighting, tens of thousands of brave warriors sacrificed themselves, but they killed many more of their foes. The ground was carpeted with the bodies of fallen Nilroggi. So many that those foul creatures could not even remove their dead, which is their custom.   The Dark God was nearly right as well though. Although the Kellen People are beginning to recover, they are still far fewer in number than they once were, and it will likely be many more generations before they have returned to even a glimmer of their former strength.   Although most of what Kellen survivors scattered throughout the Basin after the Great War, a few remained in the rugged hill country. Too few in number to constitute even a single tribe, they set about the grim work of burning the dead, both human and Nilroggi. The pyres burned for months and the air was filled with their stench. In the end though, when peace returned to the Basin, those rugged hills were still held by the Painted Warriors of Kell. Defiantly.   In more recent times, the Kellen population has been resurgent. Most of those who had scattered and started families elsewhere have returned. The Ten Tribes have been re-formed. Kell is rising from the ashes. Still on unsteady feet, to be sure, but rising indeed. The ten tribes have re-formed and united under the banner of Corsus (The Bear), of the Crow Tribe, which has restyled itself as 'The Storm Crows,' after the harrowing storm they endured. Where Braal ruled the Ten Tribes under the banner of the stone fist, the new Confederation flies the banner of the Storm Crows.

Political Situation

Nearly every Kingdom, Dutchy or territory in the Basin wants an alliance with Kell, regardless of the fact that there aren’t many people remaining in the Ten Tribes. No Kingdom, Dutchy, or territory in the Basin wants to provoke the fearsome barbarian tribes. They are living symbols of the best the Basin has to offer. Every Kellen warrior alive today is a living legend, to be feared, respected, and left alone.
