ASGARD

Overview

Asgard is still ruled by the Aesir, with Baldr now taking the role of Allfather with his wife Nanna beside him. After Ragnarok many of the Aesir's Major Gods are dead, creating a power rearrangement of many roles.

There are three Kingdoms within Asgard. This world has the highest amount of Humans upon it, with a lot of the land mass now being taken up by the towns of the original refugees decendents. The small number of Lloss Alfar that are there mainly keep themselves close to the remaining Aesir, becoming their aids and advisers, and see themselves as above the brethren on their home world. There are some Alfar elsewhere on the realm, but they are few. Even rarer are Hybrids between Humans and Alfar though they have been seen.

The governance of Asgard is based upon the sovereignty of its Aesir rulers. As a general rule, they do not mix with the Humans and Alfar socially. Disputes which cannot be settled by local magistrates appointed by the people, are brought before Vor who sees the truth of all, and Forseti if justice is needed. Trade is governed by supply and demand, with the resident Aesir or magistrate of any given settlement controlling the individual tax in goods to their own household as government officials, in exchange for the rights to trade within settlement territory. Conflict of a more martial nature is not unheard of, with small squabbles and territory disputes not uncommon; and raiding occurring. Most of the time they are left to settle them themselves, but where needed the Asgardian Army, led by Freya at Folkvangr, can intervene. Freya rarely goes to these herself, instead appointing her original Einherjar lieutenants to deal with the problem, or her second in command, Modi.

Peoples of Asgard

Playable Races

Human
Generic article | May 30, 2021

Asgard was where the higher classes; the kings, queens and other nobles amongst the Human's of the Midgard kingdoms, stayed. Over the generations they have been on Asgard, however, this has been broken down and now only the most influential hold onto a part of their families former wealth and power.

Baldr has a council of human advisers, who advise him on matters to do with human interaction and resolution, but ultimately Baldr or his appointed Aesir representative will make the decisions.

Outside of the Capital of Gladsheim, life for humans once the settling period was over proceeded much as it would have upon Midgard; the only difference being their local ruler was often a God if you lived within a large city.

Humans can do most of the roles they would have on Midgard; from farmer, smith, roving warband, government official, or if they are exceptional; the Asgardian army itself under Freya

Alfar
Generic article | Jul 1, 2021

Only Lloss Alfar settled upon Asgard following Ragnarok. These are mainly those few who still hold to the former worship of Frey, even though the God is dead. They mainly now work within the households of the Aesir, and feel themselves to be above both their people still on Alfheim for still serving the Gods, but below all others on Asgard, including humans. Humans were created by the Gods, whereas Alfar were not, and believe that as such they are not above humans, but below them.

They are not necessarily treated as such by the Aesir, nor the humans on Asgard, but it doesn't stop them thinking like this, and acting like it.

Their brethren at home find their ways baffling, and see them as deserters. Frey was appointed their King by Odin; it was never their choice.

Religion on Asgard

The religion on Asgard, for the most part is as it always has been. The Humans of Midgard and those Alfar who came from Alfheim now live nearby to their Gods. The awe and majesty of them has abated, though not diminished. Many spend their entire lives without laying eyes on one of the Aesir, but even those who do, there are still immortal beings, Deities with powers far greater than their own, and they are worshipped still.

Culture of Asgard

The Throne Guard

The Throne Guard of Asgard are the Einherjar warriors who protect Baldr and Nanna. They are fiercely loyal to the couple and will act on their orders without question. The current Throne Guard have been in position since the end of Ragnarok, as Odin's old Throne Guard died with him on Midgard. Only when an Einherjar dies will their place on the Guard be replaced; but as Einherjar are immortal, this rarely happens.

They are housed within Baldr's Hall in Gladsheim itself, so that they are never far away from their charges. They can be seen on patrol day and night around the building and its grounds. The normal Einherhar shields emblazoned with gold instead of steel.

Players cannot enter play as a Throne Guard from Asgard, as no player is an Einherjar

The Asgardian Army

The Asgardian Army is lead by Freya. Since Ragnarok she has been in sole charge of the remaining Einherjar and Valkyries from before, and has made no more of them. Her second in command is Modi, who has his father Thor's hammer Mjolnir. Under the Einherjar are units of Human warriors, who are trained from a young age to join the ranks of the army. Alfar are rarely seen within the ranks as the majority of these who came to Asgard work within the households of the Gods. Each unit has a commander known as the Warlord, and a second in command known as the Rekkr. Sections of the army are stationed all throughout the three nations of Asgard, but the headquarters and battle training ground are on the plains just outside of Gladsheim. Most Units have names, and a base of operations at a town throughout Asgard.

There are no ranks within the Asgardian army, apart from the Unit Warlord and their Rekkr. The Warlord is always an Einherjar. The Rekkr are mortals Humans.

The Units of the Army are made up of three types of Squad;

  • The Boars: The Skalborg ("Shield Wall")
  • The Wolves: The Skirmishers
  • The Ravens: The Scouts
  • Players can be from a Unit, or come in as a Unit, though cannot be the the Warlord as these are not Human positions

    Warband Culture

The culture on Asgard is much like it once was on Midgard before Ragnarok. Towns have their Jarls, and the Jarls have their raiding parties. There are countless across the realm of Asgard, who are usually identified by their flagship name and prow beasts. Some raid the other nations and make their income via the eternal back and forth this practice breeds.

Some however, are not interested in the other nations, but instead what is upon the Wildlands, where beasts of gargantuan size called The Dires are said to now live; great bears, wolves and boars who rival a man in height. Those who take down these beasts earn fame and glory at home. Kill one of the beasts, and never have to raid again.

Players may bring in groups who are warbands

    The Law of Asgard

Though there are three established nations upon Asgard, the law is universal. It was set down by Baldur in the years after the Carnage King was defeated, and the nations of Idavol and Vangr separated from what Baldur retained as Valhol. The people were divided, but the law would protect all, whilst allowing the culture of the Northmen of Midgard to remain.

    The Magistrates

The Magistrates are the lawkeepers of Asgard, presided over by Forseti. They are trained in combat first at Gladsheim, before being apprenticed out to existing Magistrates operating in towns and villages across the realm. They stand in judgement over trials and disputes between all men and women, and have the powers to make decisions which can affect the future and freedom of all across Asgard. The Magistrate may not carry out the punishment themselves, as this is often left to the wronged party, but the magistrate must declare what they punishment is and ensure it is enacted.

Players may be Magistrates, though this must be cleared with Command Team if your character is to start as one.
