#01: Dinner with the Dursts
General Summary
Whilst returning the dog Lancelot to his owners in the Great Forest, our Heroes became engulfed in a mysterious Mist, and found themselves in a different time and place: the County of Barovia. They eventually emerged from the Svalich Wood, and found the Durst House.
The Heroes approached the house and were welcomed inside by Elizabeth Durst, and given wine by Walter Durst. The couple accidently drugged themselves, instead of their "guests," and with some investigation and cajoulling, our Heroes discovered a secret cellar underneath the house.
Within the cellar, the elder Dursts — Gustav Durst and Rosavalda Durst, a Ghoul — were butchering other travellers who had fallen foul of the family. Together, our Heroes slew the Dursts, though Elizabeth (still apparently tied up upstairs) managed to slip her bonds and escape on horseback.
Our Heroes explored the rest of the house, and recovered several magical items and pieces of treasure. They identified a magical painting of Strahd von Zarovich in the hallway — a Brankusi — and barricaded themselves inside the house for the evening. The following morning, our Heroes discovered a gifted bottle of Martikov, 701 ME, and a letter addressed to them on the doorstep.
