Durst House
Durst House is an old farmstead on the eastern edge of the Barovian Basin, where it meets the Svalich Wood and the Mists. It is home to Rosavalda Durst, Gustav Durst, Elizabeth Durst, and Walter Durst.
Durst House is a two-storey Second Empire-style structure, with two out-buildings: a barn and an outhouse.
Main House, Ground Floor
The main house ground floor contains 4 rooms:- Entrance Hall. A small hallway leading off into the Living Room, Kitchen, and Mud Room, with a set of stairs heading Upstairs. There is a large, very out of place Brankusi painting of Strahd von Zarovich hanging facing the door.
- Living Room. A large room with a comfortable set of couches, a dining table, a bookshelf (all are old and mouldy, unable to be opened properly nor read), and a harpsicord. Playing the harpsicord will summon the ghosts of previous adventurers who have been slain here; they will wail and sing drunkenly on the wine that poisoned them, before being whisked into the bookshelf, which is hiding the Cellar door).
- Kitchen. A cramped room with a hearth where food can be cooked, a wine rack, and a pantry. There is a small cupboard where spices and poisons were once kept.
- Mud Room. A shabby room where coats and dirty boots can be left.
Main House, Upstairs
The main house upstairs contains 3 rooms, beyond the landing:- Master Bedroom. The Master Bedroom contains a large four-poster bed covered in claw marks, with chains attached for one side. Two large dressers (one with a false back, leading down to the Cellar) are on either end of the room. A vanity covered in expensive cosmetics and salves sits against one wall, whilst the other is festooned with "trophies" from the family's favourite kills. A chest with a musical doll house of a gothic castle sits under the trophies. Gustav Durst sleeps here, and he often brings Rosavalda Durst to sleep next to him, too, on her more lucid nights.
- "Children's" Bedroom. The "Children's Bedroom" contains two single beds pushed up against one another, and a foot locker containing a few odds and ends. Elizabeth Durst and Walter Durst sleep here.
- Guest Bedroom. This is an empty room with a single dust-covered bed, and a small basin for washing.
Outbuildings
The two out-buildings include:- Barn. The Barn is a shoddy, ramshackle construction with half a dozen pigs, and a pony and cart. The pigs are fed the "scraps" of their victims that the family don't eat, including the bones, so there are no leftovers.
- Outhouse. The Outhouse is a sagging little building with a dug hole in the ground and a wooden seat. Straw is supplied to wipe one's bottom.
Cellar
The Cellar is a secret floor, only accessible via a tunnel behind the bookshelf in the Living Room, or a crawlspace stairway behind the dresser in the Master Bedroom. It contains a butchery table, a large pile of soiled bloody rags, a rack of knives, chains into the wall which usually hold Rosavalda Durst, a slab bed with a "nest" of torn finery, and meat hooks to bleed victims.Valuables
The following valuables could be found within Durst House:
- Master Bedroom. Cat's Eye Elixir, Elixir of Life (Minor), and Yellow Musk Vial. Flask of Fellowship, and Necklace of Knives). A small cash box contains 28 gold pieces.
- "Children's" Bedroom. Eyecatcher, Mud Bomb (Lesser), Predictable Iron Piece, and Slippery Ribbon. A small bundle hidden under the bed contains 12 gold pieces.
