Sa'anlos

Overview

Sa'anlos is the thriving, and sometimes infamous, capital of the pirate nation in the Isles of Ilhon, situated on the island of Saldea, the southernmost of the islands. It is a vibrant city settlement, a haven for pirates, smugglers and adventurers alike. The oftentime chaotic nature of Sa'anlos though has largely been tamed by the current ruler: Pirate Queen Adi Baris. It is divided into two notable districts: Opportunist's Shores and Wild Tide Cliffs.

Government

The settlement, and region, are ruled by the Pirate Queen with her most loyal Captains acting as a pseudo-council under her. Captains Mulgore, Mardu and Unathanaki are regarded as her inner circle, and Captains Copperstone, Hale, Meer, Ohnaka and Vainor as the rest of her loyalists included in broader meetings.

Demographics

The demoraphics of Sa'anlos change on a regular basis, with arrivals and departures occuring at a regular rate. The only constant is that humans, as in general, are the most populous sapient species amongst them. Sa'anlos also boasts a well above-average percentage of Altarans and Sea Elves, with both being native to the continent of Drassau.

Religion

Naturally, with the predominant culture being one of sailing, or sailing-adjacent, worship is largely limited to Essina, for the winds, and Tidur, for the waters. However, since Sa'anlos draws in folks from all over and all walks of life, they bring their beliefs with them so it wouldn't take long for you to find someone who worships any particular god or goddess.

Architecture

A lot of Opportunist's Shores is made up of wooden structures, with Wild Tide Cliffs housing the majority of the town's stone buildings.

Geography & Climate

Sa'anlos, as with almost of Drassau as a whole, falls under a tropical climate. Plenty of sunshine is balanced out with occasional violent storms.

Agriculture

For a town with natural frequent overturn of residents, there is a minor agriculture situation there. Mostly in plantation form, the lands on the edge of Saldea are used for fruits such as bananas, oranges and other tropical items, along with things like coffee and cotton.

History

Origins

The Isles of Ilhon were first settled in the Age of Discovery, like most places, by early explorers and settlers. However, the isolated and secluded nature of the Isles led them to becoming a smuggler's haven, and it wasn't long before that activity turned the Isles as a whole into a region of piracy. The naturally defensible settlement of Sa'anlos, with cliffside districting providing a great vantage point for defenders became the centre of this culture, despite it being on the southernmost island.

Over the Years

The fort-like mansion of Wild Tide Manor was built shortly after the establishment of Sa'anlos as the heart of the region, which only improved its defensibility, making Sa'anlos even more of a prized target for would-be rulers. Over the years, despite the defences, Sa'anlos has changed hands many, many times.

The Time of the Pirate Queen

Adi Baris came to power nine years ago, in 576PC. She deposed the then Pirate King Vyron Milar, who was killed in the process. She did this through ingenuity and acquiring loyal allies - a rarity in the waters of Ilhon, at least in the way Adi did it via trust and not fear. Baris has been considered as a good influence on Sa'anlos, quelling much of the natural volatility that comes naturally to the region. The number of loyalists to her has only grown in the years since. However, with such a relatively long tenure, so have the number of enemies that make their bases elsewhere in the Isles.
