Arkos (City)
Arkos (the city) has a long history of seeing destruction and violence. Once a major Cyanni city-state, this settlement has survived some of the largest wars in Avani history and multiple natural (or non-natural) disasters. Through all of these attacks and even after its near-destruction this city has remained, always a massive population center and home of the arts.
Demographics
Present-day Arkos city is a massive, wealthy, and powerful city, though most of this power and wealth is concentrated in a relatively small amount of birdfolk even by late-medieval standards. At least 82% (probably more) of the population is trapped into lower-class jobs such as industry, military, and agriculture. Unlike many cities, many merchants and business owners are also within this category. Arkosi culture generally considers these money-focused professions the lowest of the low and the government generally strips away their incomes en masse.
A miniscule portion of the city, around 4%, is middle class. About 6% of the city consists of wealthy artisans, academics, and craftsmen. The city is also devoutly religious, with 3% of the population directly employed by the Order of light. The remaining portion of the settlement consists of nobility and landed elite. There is very little economic mobility. The class that birdfolk are born in is usually what they will stay in most of their life.
Arkos is an overwhelmingly Paridus city, with small minorities for Sparalus and Hirundine. There are zero Cyanni within the city limits; if any were to enter they would probably be lynched or otherwise killed within a few days.
History
A long time ago, Arkos city was once controlled by the precursor Cyanni kingdom and named Andaras city, after the Andaras River Valley it is located in. Though most of the remnants of this period are long-destroyed, what is left indicates that it had a massive population and was extremely powerful. However, it was completely devastated by the invasion from Arkos. The entire population of the city was driven out or killed during these attacks. Thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, died in this war.
In the remains of this smouldering city, its new inhabitants began anew and constructed it bigger and better. Under its new caretakers it was renamed Arkos city and rebuilt. It quickly became an important political center known for its artistic projects and beautiful architecture. However, this would not be the only time that it had to be rebuilt. The Culling, a spree of criminal attacks focused on poisoning major water supplies, struck the city hard, and the Cyanni War did a significant amount of damage. Though the city is nearly a thousand years old, most of the major structures were built within the last 100 years.
