Sabani Wastes

Named after the nation of Sabani, the Sabani Wastes are a vast area of about 10000 miles² covered in snow, much of it permafrost, and coniferious forests. Its summer is only about 3 lunas long, and its winters are worst than any place except the arctic. As far as the Avani know, it is completely uninhabited.

Geography

In the northeast of the continent Alvana, the Sabani wastes are a vast area of wilderness situated right in the path of a wind current coming in from the north. This brings in a constant stream of cold air and keeps the vast area artificially cooler than many places at a similar latitude. These vast hills dotted with trees are covered in snow nearly every day of the year, even during summer in some areas, and in the winter it can drop to -62 F at night. Powerful winds constantly blow over the hills and plains, making every storm into a blizzard and stirring up fallen snow to create storms where there was none. Rivers that cross the wastes are generally frozen most of the year, making obtaining drinkable water difficult. Mountain ranges separate it from the rest of the continent on the west and east, making the area even more difficult to pass through safely. Travellers trying to reach the west from Perengi and Tias must generally go south and around, or else they risk a perilous and lonely journey. Generally it is only possible to traverse it during 7th, 8th and 9th lunas, when the snow has usually melted and the weather is less severe.

Natural Resources

Though there has yet to be a comprehensive expedition into the region, it is quite plentiful with untouched trees and untapped mineral resources. A prospector named Katie Velas recently visited the region and detected large amounts of good iron and silver in the ground. In spite of the terrible weather and isolation she is assembling a team with the eventual goal of establish a mining operation in the region.
