Atraea's Throne

Atraea's Throne is the capital city of the Atraelian Empire and the seat of power of the ruling emperor, Lucius Solaris and his clan, the Solaris Clan. The city is located in the central region of the Divine Continent, and is surrounded by fertile plains, rolling hills, and winding rivers.   The city itself is a bustling metropolis, with grand palaces, soaring towers, and winding streets that are home to millions of people. The architecture of the city reflects the power and majesty of the Atraelian Empire, with grand buildings adorned with intricate carvings, gleaming surfaces, and towering columns.   At the heart of the city lies the Radiant Citadel, a sprawling complex of buildings and courtyards that serves as the center of the empire's political and cultural life. The palace is designed to evoke the power and majesty of the sun goddess, with grand statues and carvings depicting Atraea in her various aspects throughout the complex.   Surrounding the palace are the grand marketplaces of the city, where merchants from all over the world come to trade in exotic goods and rare treasures. The marketplaces are a bustling hub of activity, filled with the sounds of haggling, bartering, and commerce.   Also within the city is the Tower of Judgement, an imposing dark tower that serves as the headquarters of the Imperial Inquisitors. Within the city is also the Nexus Hall, the headquarters for the Adventurer's Guild of Atraeleon. Here one can find training, quests, and comraderie for exploring the many wonders of Atraeleon.   Throughout the city, there are many temples and shrines dedicated to Atraea, where priests and worshippers gather to offer prayers and make offerings to the sun goddess. These temples are often grand and ornate structures, designed to evoke the power and majesty of Atraea and inspire devotion in her followers. Shrines to other deities of the Divinitas Concordia are present, but none so prominent as Atraea's.   Near the southern edge of the city, a tributary river enters the city and snakes through a canal before leaving again, eventually ending at the River of Souls a few miles outside the walls. Docks can be found all along this river, allowing passage for pilgrims on their way to Sanctum Delta for The Passage.   Overall, Atraea's Throne is a grand and impressive city, designed to reflect the power and majesty of the Atraelian Empire and its patron deity. It is a hub of culture, commerce, and religious devotion, and serves as the beating heart of the entire world of Atraeleon.

Demographics

Atraea's Throne boasts a grand diversity of races and ethnicities within its boundaries. One can find denizens of nearly every race in Atraeleon, some who call the city their home and many more simply passing through on business or pilgrimage. The city is also one of the few places one can find the modest middle class, whether acting as skilled artisans for the elite or hired help in some other capacity. The vast majority of the population is still made up of peasants who facilitate most of the commerce in the city.

Defences

Each district is surrounded by walls of varying height, with the tallest and strongest walls around the Sun Heart and the weakest walls surrounding the Outer City. Massive gatehouses can be found at various locations throughout the city, as well as on the river running through the southeastern corner of the city. Siege engines can be seen atop the wall's towers, resting under tarps to protect them from the weather until needed.

Districts

The Sun Heart lies in the center of the city and is home to most of the temple and palace complexes housed in the city, including the Radiant Citadel and the Tower of Judgement. The district is surrounded by thick masonry walls but its towers can still be seen from anywhere nearby.   The Inner City surrounds the Sun Heart and is home to most of the city's elite. Here one can find vast mansions attended to by dozens of servants who may live on the grounds or commute from the middle or outer city. This district is also surrounded by thick masonry walls, though not quite as tall as the central walls.   The Middle City makes up the next ring in the mostly circular city. Here one can find the modest middle class and much of the trade and commerce in the city, as well as much of the lower class struggling to break their way out of their station. Many temples, workshops, taverns and inns can be found littered amongst the tightly packed houses and streets. This vast district is once again surrounded by walls, these again being lower but still thick and sturdy masonry.   The Outer City is the final district of the city, and is made up mostly of lower class housing and cheap accomodations for pilgrims. It is often considered a dangerous and repugnant place, populated almost exclusively by peasants and criminals. Despite this, the overwhelming majority of the city's population actually lives here, surrounded by the shoddy palisade walls built over decades to protect the outer reaches of the city from bandit and monster raids. Many commoners feel right at home here, versus the "high society" atmosphere of the middle and inner cities.
