River of Souls

The largest river in Atraeleon is known as the River of Souls. It is a wide, slow-moving river that snakes its way through the heart of the continent, starting near the mountain ranges at Atraea's Throne. The water is a deep blue-green color, and it is said that the river's undercurrent is so powerful that it can pull the soul from a drowing body and carry it away to the afterlife. The River of Souls is also believed to be a sacred place, and many people come to its banks to perform religious ceremonies or to seek guidance from the spirits that reside there. Many also perform the Final Pilgrimage along or on the river, baring their dead to Pharasma's temple prime, The Gatekeepers' Sanctuary. Along the river, there are several small villages and towns that rely on the water for irrigation and transportation. The river is also home to a variety of fish and other aquatic creatures, and it is a popular spot for fishing and other recreational activities. The river's delta begins near the ocean where the metropolis of Sanctum Delta has developed over the last 1500 years.
