Pine Pox Condition in Ardre | World Anvil

Pine Pox

Found principally in the southern half of Milos and especially in the Revellian Promontory and the Rathlands, Pine Pox is more strongly associated with the damp and the cold than the lumber from which it derives its name. Even after centuries, a superstition remains regarding contact with pine, resulting in greater prejudice against Khabarese pine among more rural peoples, especially the Nakki of Urudun.   The illness is best known for the wan, pine-like complexion it gives its victims, being far more pronounced (and far deadlier) for those of more earthen skin tones. While Springlight Fever and Winter chills are seasonal, Pine Pox can be caught year round, usually from another person, and typically from a child. The pox can be debilitating in children, with some of them losing partial or total control of one or more limbs, yet the disease if far deadlier in adults, and Nakki parents have been known to eject sick children from their homes, calling them changelings, should they contract the disease. The ghast skin and reddened eyes that typically accompany Pine Pox do draw obvious parallels with Ghastling, who are frequently accused of being changelings themselves.   Though far more common in the rural areas with Deinain worship and superstitions remain, Pine Pox can be found in more civilized places, even in colder cities like Dubraigh and Aerwoth, where it is regarded as far less serious, similar to the pains of a child's new tooth or blood freckles.
