Brinid Younger Character in Ardre | World Anvil

Brinid Younger

Wizard Brinid Ainden

Wizard under Dorre Bastion and Corrik Bastion   Brinid Younger is the first wizard of whom any real records are kept. She was reportedly taken from Clan Ainden and trained by Brinid Binder. She is called Binder's first apprentice, but there are no records of other apprentices. It is unclear whether more apprentices were expected but never came, or if said apprentices proved insufficient to the training or were perhaps sent off to other castles.   Brinid Younger's service under Dorre was a constant attempt to prevent open rebellion. Clans Graunt and Ainros, both relatively minor clans at the time, where steadily gaining power, and it is widely agreed that the Bastion Rebellion showed all the clan chiefs that the divine right to rule might not be as divine as they had once thought. Younger even tried to bargain a marriage between King Dorre and a daughter of Graunt, but Dorre already had two wives and showed no interest in a third. This failed negotiation only turned Graunt further away, and Ainros (at the time) was simply too meager a clan to consider.   Dorre died of his years in 698 RA. Disinterested in governance as he was, he had always been very clear that he wanted his third son, Corrik, to rule. It is widely assumed this was out of favoritism for his second wife, Corrik's mother. Dorre's first two sons were both established warriors, and in fact one of them fought with Clan Ainros in the rebellion that started immediately after Dorre's death. Despite doing her utmost to hold the canton together in spite of Dorre's poor kingship, Brinid Younger acceded to her dead king's command and crowned Corrik.   The war lasted almost three years, but the end seemed a foregone conclusion. The ancient clans of Elkwood and Beth showed no interest in the conflict, leaving Corrik with few allies of any significance, and the geographical positioning of Ainros and Graunt cut the king off from much of his lands.   In 701 RA, Corrik and his family fled north through the Fens of Fuien into Ethel, leaving Brinid Younger to surrender Castle Aerwoth to the rebels. This would earn Corrik the title Coward for the rest of time, yet such would prove poor comfort to Wizard Brinid.   Ever dutiful, Brinid Younger remained at the castle to lower the standards and hand over all power to Greeyan Ainros, who named himself king of Revellia. Greeyan commended Brinid on her loyalty, yet this would not save her in the end. Greeyan had his own wizard, and was happy to invoke the tradition of burning the previous ruler's wizard.   Some spells suggest Brinid Younger had an apprentice, also named Brinid, who fled the castle. If so, nothing more is known of her.
