The New Federal Committee

Inagurated in 718 under the leadership of Magelord Novia Celsa, the New Federal Committee represents Madam Celsa's broader attempts to make the government of the Federation of Vay more responsive to and representative of its population. Comprised of individuals from various demographics and backgrounds intended to represent the diverse interests within the population, the New Federal Committee is intended to ultimately replace the Magelord as the central executive and legislative power in the Federation.

Appointment

The Committee is intended to be a democratically-elected body, but for the sake of getting the Federal government functional for the first time in more than three years, this first group of representatives were chosen prior to any elections. The current members of the Committee were selected by Madam Celsa based on conversations with community leaders throughout the Federation. The first Committee elections are to be held in 720, recurring every five years thereafter. A representative will be elected for each seat currently on the Committee, but there are steps in place to petition for additional seats for representatives of other populations or interest groups.

Responsibilities

As a brand-new part of the Federal government, the exact function of the Committee and the responsibilities of its members are yet to be determined, and it is likely that those functions and responsibilities will evolve as the Federal government completes its democratic transition. However, its responsibilities are informed by its intended purpose. The Committee is a deliberative body intended to grant voices to the populations poorly represented by the Council, the members of which have overwhelmingly been Dimira human mages from the elite patriar class. As such, the responsibliities of the representatives on the Committee are shaped by the populations they represent.
In the time since its inauguration, the New Federal Committee has met daily to deliberate on executive and legislative matters, particularly those crucial matters related to the ongoing restructuring of the Federal government. The Committee has been responsible for acts including the abolition of the Vayan class system, the cessation of government-funded human experimentation, and the initiation of a program to bring the Federal aerorail system back online.
