Giancalo Salemanco

Minister of Defense (a.k.a. The Last Man of the East)

Giancalo Salemanco is the youngest son of Bartolome Salemanco, the Governor of Tarraledo and Minister of Defense for all of Aracia. Obsessed with the events of the Infernal Wars that killed his father, Giancalo joined the military as soon as he was able at the age of sixteen, using an assumed name to prevent preferential treatment. He rose in the ranks due to his keen strategic mind and his willingness to do the mundane, necessary work of a soldier on the Eastern Border. This brought him an immense amount of respect amongst the rank-and-file, as well as the officer corps, driving his push towards leadership. Rodrigo rewarded his efforts by giving him full control of Aracia's military forces at just twenty-eight years old.    Perhaps his most famous accomplishment occurred early on in his career, when he joined Aracian Special Forces in an investigation to the disappearance of a battalion in Fort Escundo, across the eastern border to The Battlehaunt. His squad was ambused by a group of roving Devils leftover from the Infernal Wars and he was the only survivor. Still, he pushed on, finding the missing soldiers in a hobgoblin battle camp, freeing them, and single-handedly fighting off a dozen or more hobgoblins to lead them safely home.    He has seen the horrors of the Battlehaunt and remains deeply skeptical that Mephistia has abandoned its devil-worshipping ways. As such, Giancalo is militant in his approach to the defense of the nation and concerned that Rodrigo's plan to overturn power to a democratic body will destabilize the country and offer up a weak spot that their enemies could exploit. He is an opponent of democratization, believing that only through the central authority of a king can their multiplying enemies be kept at bay.    Working with his loyalists, as well as a number of sympathetic merchants in Riocruce, Giancalo hatched a plot to end the democratic transition. He secretly instructed the Xavast Crusade, a criminal group that he saw as little threat, to attack the port city so that his forces could sweep in and save the day - showing Western Aracia a modicum of the threats the East had been under since the end of the war.    His plot foiled, Giancalo was imprisoned in Riocruce for several days, until his own forces invaded the city to free him - using the abduction of the Sovereign Prince as justification. He then proceeded to march on Nansuelo, finally convinced that the only means of ensuring the continuation of the Salemanco line would be to assume the throne himself. He lost that battle, though put a large dent in Nansuelo's defenses and has retreated across the river to lick his wounds and recover.
