Basilia Salemanco
Duchess of Espenaros (a.k.a. The Painted Maiden)
Basilia Salemanco is the third child of Bartolome Salemanco, Duchess of Espenaros and a renowned painter and architect.
Though her artistic work is known throughout Aracia, Basilia does her best to steer clear of the limelight, preferring to spend her evenings painting instead of attending galas or engaging in political theater. She has little interest in governance and her title as Duchess of Espenaros is almost entirely ceremonial. This seclusion has given her the nickname "The Painted Maiden" among the public, as her portraits are more likely to be seen than her face.
In truth, Basilia is a selfish and jealous woman, believing that her brother - Rodrigo - betrayed their family and lineage by agreeing to step aside as king. Her paintings often display this in plain sight. They are hyper-nationalistic, bordering on propaganda and are particularly popular in Eastern Aracia because they often highlight the struggles that region went through during the Infernal Wars.
While she is polite and attentive at family functions, Basilia prefers her own domain, locking herself away and only seeing her closest friends and allies. The only sibling she maintains regular contact with is Giancalo, as she appreciates his wit and strategic mind.
Basilia was part of Giancalo's plot to arrange an attack on Riocruce that he could then swoop in and save the city from - portraying himself as the hero. Her full role is still unknown. She was briefly imprisoned after the discovery of this plot, but has since been released by Giancalo's forces. She is the temporary leader of Riocruce, a job she loathes and is not particularly good at.
