Lucinda Salemanco
Queen of Sanctuary
The youngest of Bartolome's children, and born after his death, Lucinda was promised to the son of Queen Eristea of Mephistia - an arranged marriage designed to solidify newly formed ties between the two nations at the end of The Infernal Wars. Though it was not her preference, Lucinda grew up knowing that this was her duty and would help to maintain the fragile peace. She was raised and educated in both Nansuelo and Merrive, introduced to her future husband when she was just twelve years old.
Luckily, Damakos was a kind, thoughtful, brilliant soul that could match Lucinda's wit and curiosity. The tiefling boy had been alienated from much of Mephistian society because he was a visual reminder of his family's flirtation with fiends - but Lucinda, an outsider herself, offered him comfort and their love grew naturally. Seeing Damakos' plight gave Lucinda a deep empathy for the sentient creatures of Sheanora that often went unnoticed or uncared for because of their appearance: tieflings, orcs, goblins, minotaurs, etc. It became their shared dream to provide refuge to the "monstrous" peoples' of the continent.
Twelve years ago, Queen Eristea made this dream possible and gifted her son the narrow island to the west of the Mephistian peninsula to create a new nation for all the displaced peoples' of Sheanora. Sanctuary was born, Damakos was its king and Lucinda was its Queen.
The people of Sanctuary view Lucinda with skepticism because she is human - and her children are human as well. They worry that her children will go onto subjugate them as they have been in other societies. Despite her constant charitable outreach, Lucinda has not been able to sway the opinions of her diverse citizenry. For this reason, Lucinda feels disconnected from her new homeland. She longs for Aracia and writes letters to Rodrigo every week, asking for his guidance and offering her own counsel.
Lucinda is highly educated and perhaps the most purely intelligent of all the Salemanco siblings. Her nose is always in a book and she is well-versed in subject matters as diverse as medicine, military strategy, diplomacy and economics. She often offers Rodrigo information about building a nation from scratch, as that is what he feels like he is doing with the transition to democracy.
She is less close with the rest of her family. It has been years since she has heard from Basilia or Giancalo and Ernesto sends her only occasional trite greetings. Lucinda does not hold this against them, as she knows they are all busy. Still, she worries about the family's inner strife and hopes that it will never come to a head.
