Johann
Johann was a soldier of the Tevinter Imperium. He was tainted in a darkspawn assault during a mission and a few weeks later passed away.
He and his family lived in Schwarzstein, where his wife Vania worked as a tavern maid at the Golden Sun Inn. He is also survived by his three children Yana, Lukas, and Donnic, as well as his mother Hulda.

Personal history
Johann was born and raised in Schwarzstein, and it was also where he married and settled down. Both he and his wife had been born into this Blight, and the Imperium offered a generous pay to soldiers willing to stand against the horde. Johann who saw his hometown and young family -threatened by the encroaching darkness signed up as a soldier. He travelled far and wide and cherished the time he could spend with his family. His children looked up to him, and he was conviced to be doing the right thing to keep them save, although Vania wasn't as happy about him being away usually for months at a time.
In the end, the worst case scenario took place: during a mission Johann was injured and tainted. Under strange circumstances he returned back home, being dropped off by two soldiers he was friends with. His mother Hulda as well as Vania tried their best to save his life, spending a lot of money on unconventional approaches of healing him. The villagers were suspicious about the family's dealings, not impressed with having a tainted person amongst them. And it turned out that, despite getting better initially, there was no cure for the taint: Johann eventually passed away in his family's home and was cremated according to the traditions of the town.

This was the official version at least. In fact though Johann's health did improve due to the treatment of Hulda and Vania - but he couldn't recover fully, remaining physically disfigured. Mentally though he stabilized quickly, but the villagers kept getting more and more hostile towards the family, seeing him as a threat amongst them. Hulda was convinced that if they managed to get him to Minrahous a friend of the old woman might be able to help find a cure. Hulda herself used to be a powerful blood mage, and she still had connections in Minrathous. So the family came up with a plot together, deciding to fake Johann's death and hiding him in the mines.
The plan worked out surprisingly well, the village was convinced he had died. Two family members brought supplies to the mines every couple of nights and checked in on his state, but improvements to his health stagnated. Physically the taint was still wearing him out. Then another blow followed: as Yana and Lukas brought food to the mines one night, two alleged adventurers discovered the family's secret. They said that the Magisterium had sent them to dispose of a threat - and in self-defense Yana killed them, much to Johann's and Lukas shock. The same night Johann was smuggled out of town with the plan to secretly follow after the caravan the family wanted to take out of town. The reason as for why the Magisterium was onto him was probably because he had been part of a variety of secret missions while with the military. He had witnessed horrible experiments being conducted with tainted soldiers, and he fled because he would have rather died in the desert than being tortured like his comrades.
After fleeing from Schwarzstein he waited in the desert for the arrival of the caravan, then followed only just out of sight - but Mira and Maxfiled eventually spotted the footprints the family had left outside of the camp as they brought their father food each night. After a few days of traveling Johann was confronted by the group in the dead of night, fearing at first that another group of government officials was onto him now. In a dramatic moment Yana and Lukas threatened to intervene if anyone harmed him, but thankfully the situation could be resolved peacefully. Johann answered all the questions the group had and Junius wrote down a detailed "confession" of the things Johann had experienced in the military.
While writind down his confession, a darkspawn attack suddenly occured at the caravan camp and the group decided to leave Johann be for the moment to take care of the immediate threat first. Johann though couldn't just stand and watch as his family was in danger of being killed, he ran into the camp and fought against two genlocks with his bare hands to save his wife. He was injured badly though, and one of the caravan leaders thought he was attacking Vania, so he started to shoot at him. Knowing that Vania was save he fled again, but his injuries took their toll eventually. The group helped to ease his pain, secretly reuinited him with his family a last time, and then he passed away in the desert, surrounded by his family.
His body was burned out of sight of the caravan camp and Lukas left his sword and shield next to the buring pyre as a marker for his father's grave, and as a reminder that he died a soldier's death, not a monster's.
Relationships
History
They have known each other since their childhood and led a very happy marriage. Both loved their kids dearly. Vania was proud of her husband's work and he admired her strength and determination. Johann's illness and death were devastating to both of them.

Faking Johann's death and working on a cure for the taint was originally Vania's and Hulda's idea; but he reluctantly agreed to the plan, in the desperate hope of having more time to spend with his family.
History
Donnic always immensely looked up to his father, so his death hit him very hard. To Johann Donnic was this special gift of the gods, due to his happy nature and sheer indestructible positivity.
History
Lukas looked up to his father a great deal, despite not being overly fond of his profession as a solider. He missed im a lot whenever he was travelling, and was always seen close by his side when Johann was home.

He received lethal injuries from a genlock while he tried to save his family from a darkspawn attack. Due to his already sickened state he couldn't recover and peacefully passed away surrounded by his family in the same night.
