Lyston Settlement in Amalgama | World Anvil

Lyston

Lyston is the capital of Isfeljor. A bustling city full of trade, Lyston also displays exquisite craftsmanship in its architecture. All towns and villages of Isfeljor end up trading with Lyston, as Lyston is the main port3 that imports—and exports—exotic goods from around the world.   Though still quite chilly, the snow doesn't always stick around.
3As of 297, this is no longer true. Hvithavon now sees more trade than Lyston. Lyston's ports are still very popular, however, because of cheaper tax.

Demographics

Lyston is a mix of races and cultures, though—like most port cities—far more triton live here. Isfeljor natives make up most of the population, but a large number of Gulgrenns now call Lyston home. Farmers, traders, and Keepers are the most common professions living in Lyston, but many artists visit to contribute their skill to the city's structures.

Government

Generally, each profession and operation is maintained by guilds. However, like other towns in the world, Lyston has a town representative to speak for them in all guild and Paritet matters. Representatives are elected for this position by the town residents. Lyston's representative is Venleth Stjerne.

Defences

Lyston boasts a 20-foot tall wall to ward off monsters and attacks. It is carved with images of victories over beasts and monstrosities, both exterior- and interior-facing. There are three gates, each encompassed by large statues encompassing the entrance. A fox stands over the west gate, a giant arctic char cups vertically around the north gate, and an owl with outstretched wings makes up the east gate.   Lyston's harbor is within its fjord, the mouth of which is guarded by a pair of towers and mini-harbor for inspections. The west tower is shaped like a great bear, and the east a mighty hawk.   The Enforcers employ a healthy number of guards to protect the city from monsters and bandits, as well as patrolling for criminal activity within the walls.

Industry & Trade

One of Lyston's most important exports is ice blocks, gathered from the ice fields near Isjorbe. Many foreign cities look to Lyston to supply exquisite meat—both game and fish. Additionally, local harvesters supply salt4 to be sold elsewhere.   Of course, Isfeljor's fine craftmanship of leather, furs, jewelry, furniture, art, and more is well-known. Lyston serves as the mainSee above note. port of trade for these items.
It should be noted that the farms surrounding Lyston supply unique crops for sale as well, such as beets, kale, and turnips.

Infrastructure

Ringed around the western and northern fields of the city is farmland that stretches for several miles. Famers often set up shop along Vestvei and Nordvei to sell excess crops to travelers. Lyston's robust harbor attracts merchant and passenger vessels alike. Fisheries, taverns, brothels, and souvenir shops dominate the roads near the docks2.   Salt refineries keep close to the shoreline within the city walls. Beyond the southern section of the city, four more distinct distracts can be seen. The northwest houses The Varlsaeum, workshops, museums, schools, and so on. The northeast is home to fine arts and crafts of many varieties, including breweries, gardens, and galleries. To the southeast is where one will find the blacksmiths and other such factories. The southwest is mostly housing, but many historical shops and craftsmen work out this district as well.   And embedded into the nearly all the stonework of the walls, towers, sculptures, roads, arches, and buildings are twinkling lightstones that give the city its name.

Guilds and Factions

All guilds have a steady presence in Lyston. Guild leaders overseeing operations in Isfeljor are stationed here. The Keepers headquarters—The Varlsaeum—is located here.

History

Year 169: The remnants ██ Ly██████ and ███ ██████████ ██e use as the fou██████n ██ ███uild. Bevarl-stone from the Repository was specifically repurposed for the wall to help halt elemental damage.   Year 180: Construction on The Varlsaeum1 begins as The Keepers is officially established.   Year 268: The economic bust of Himmgulhavon in 268 lead many Gulgrenns to seek work elsewhere. Many of them moved to Lyston, creating their own community within the walls.

1The old Repository was torn down, to the best of our ability. Much of the bevarl-stone rubble proved useful in constructing the city wall's foundation.

2And shanties, now.

4Note to self: compare export quantity, profit, and general feedback against Blackstein salt to see if this needs revision.
