Faubourg de Marchix

Map of Naoned
The City of Naoned and surroounding region

Demographics

The population of Marchix is largely a mix of Bediz and Teuz, almost universally farmers, but with some merchants and grocers in the mix. Fishermen live along the shoreline of the Erzh.

Government

Marchix is largely governed by a small council of appointed representatives and elected civil leaders, both of whom report and take orders from the Council of 18. Marchix typically holds little power in the larger council, but occasionally, a noble with agricultural holdings in the surrounding countryside will use Marchix as an avenue to power.

Infrastructure

Marchix is surrounded by water, located between the Erzh River and a wet moat circling the old earthworks. The island is accessed by four bridges: Two to the fields and mills in the surrounding countryside and two into the city. These latter two are Pont Commoneau, which crosses the Erzh into the Mask District through a fortified gatehouse, and the Rescue Bridge, which connects to Place d'Aiguillon.

History

The War of the Black Dog

Marchix was established during the campaigns of Conomor the Cursed in the 390s, under the reign of Waroch I, Kont of Gwened.   At war with the Black Dog of Poher, Gwened was vulnerable, both to its eponymous capital and the Southern city of Corbilo. To prepare for an attack, command of the city was given to Roland of Gwitreg and Armel Guyon. The pair oversaw the construction of an earthworks fortification on the elevation Northwest corner of the city, the most likely avenue of attack. Instead, the attack came from the Sea, and the city was quickly overrun, the Marchix fortifications taken from the city walls themselves.

The Old Fort and a new settlement

Though Marchix had fallen during its initial defense, construction continued and the area served as a bulwark in subsequent engagements, protecting the city against Viking Raids along the Liger River. It was again abandoned during the Fomorian Interregnum, then reclaimed during the campaigns of Alan "Al Louarn" II.

Points of interest

  • The Marche de Talensac is a covered market, located on the old parade ground of Waroch's Fort. It is popular among the fishermen of Naoned, and is the largest seafood market in the city, focusing on local trade.
