Ners

Gártan: Ners /nɛːrs/
Góalanic: Nernis /nɛːrnɪːs/

Ners is a city in the Góalanic Federation, located at the innermost part of the Bay of Práhes in southeastern Góalanis. It's one of the largest cities of the Góalanic Orcs and a center of trading with the various countries of Gysikan to the south.

Infrastructure

In much the same way as in other Góalanic cities, the apartments and mansions of old have since been replaced with farmsteads, surrounding a large pasture for cows, once site of the main marketplace. The homes of the wealthy are located closer to the harbour outside the walls, while most of the góalanic population lives outside just outside the city, clustered by the beach.
Since the local aristocracy prefers honouring the góalorcic deities at home or in the open, the city has relatively few shrines, mostly dedicated to foreign gods to accommodate merchants and other travelers, but recently there have been plans of erecting a temple to the orcish chtonic god Knóríalk at the site of the ancient battle that sealed the city's fate.

History

Historically, the city has been the capital -or at least major city- of a series of kingdoms ruled by native Góalanics dating back to the dawn of bronze age in the region. At the time of the orcish invasion of Góalanis during the first two centuries following the sudden fall of the Paþarían Empire in central Adynía, Nernis was capital of the kingdom of Eralía, and over time became one of and, eventually, the final stronghold of independent góalanics.
With the demise of king Hirelos Svaras II at the Battle of Nernis in 203 a.Paþ, most of the city was destroyed, safe for a few homes, portions of the walls and a single shrine where the local snake oracle and her guardian lived. The latter were allowed to to remain unharmed by the orcs, who feared that the oracle would otherwise haunt the city for all eternity, and it wasn't until after her death that the local population grudgingly accepted the orcish Gahirkog tribe as rulers of the city.
Nernis, known to the góalanic orcs as Ners, has since been rebuilt over the centuries, first as part of further invasions south and, failing that, as a major trading hub between Góalanis and Gysikan, featuring goods from as far as Úrún to the northwest and Kingdom of Faron to the south.

Architecture

Nernis' architecture is heavily influenced by gysikanic and even faronian styles, a trend which was already apparent before the invasions and has since only become more prominent as the old góalanic style declined. In particular, paintings of hunting- and mythological scenes, along with complex floral and curvilinear patterns, adorn the inner walls of the home of the local rúk -chief of the Gahirkog tribe- and other aristocrats.
