Withered Wilds

The Withered Wilds is not a place of safety. It is a land where mortals and nature have long since blurred, and where life clings to existence only by embracing the inevitability of death.

Geography

The Withered Wilds is a nightmarish expanse of rotting forests, blighted swamps, and fungal wastelands, where the very land seems to breathe with decay. Once a flourishing wilderness, the region has succumbed to necrotic corruption, transforming it into a realm where death is not an end, but a necessary cycle of existence. Gnarled, half-dead trees stretch toward the sky, their bark covered in pulsing fungi and creeping black vines that feed on the remains of the fallen. The rivers run dark and viscous, laced with spores and toxins, and the air carries the scent of damp earth and slow decomposition.

Climate

The Withered Wilds is trapped in an eternal autumn, where the sun barely penetrates the canopy of dying trees, and the sky is often choked with spore-filled mists. The land pulses with unnatural vitality, cycling through decay and rebirth at an accelerated rate. In some regions, corpses dissolve within hours, their essence feeding the land and sprouting grotesque plant life. In others, the soil itself is so saturated with necrotic energy that even the dead refuse to rest, rising as shambling husks animated by fungal infestations.

Fauna & Flora

Every living thing in the Withered Wilds has adapted to the region’s unique cycle of life and death.

  • Carnivorous Plants: Towering Corpse Blossoms and Mawroot Vines feast on decaying flesh, spreading their roots to consume whatever they ensnare.
  • Fungal Beasts: Creatures native to the Wilds are often infected by spore-born parasites, their bodies twisted into unnatural forms that continue to move even after suffering fatal wounds.
  • Living Trees: Some of the oldest trees, known as Hollow Elders, whisper in eerie voices, spreading their influence across the land. It is said that they choose which travelers may pass—and which must feed the Wilds.

Natural Resources

The Withered Wilds reject traditional currency, instead operating on a barter system intertwined with decay. Favors, secrets, and sacrificial offerings are the primary means of exchange.

  • Necrotic Artifacts: Alchemists and dark mages trade in rare fungal reagents, preserved bones, and death-imbued relics harvested from the land.
  • Living Weapons: Some warriors wield vines that tighten around their foes, fungi-coated blades that poison upon impact, and armor that grows stronger the closer its wearer is to death.
  • Rot-bound Contracts: Some desperate individuals seek the Wilds for power, striking soul-binding bargains that grant them unnatural resilience—at the cost of their flesh slowly succumbing to decay.

History

The people of the Withered Wilds—primarily mutated elves, corrupted druids, and fungal-infested mortals—embrace decay as sacred. They do not fear death; instead, they worship the cycle of rot and renewal, believing that all things must be broken down and returned to the land. Villages are built within the hollow husks of ancient trees, and their agriculture consists of necrotic gardening, where crops grow from decomposing creatures.

Outsiders are rarely welcomed, and those who enter uninvited often find themselves sacrificed to the land—buried in necrotic bogs, offered to hunger-mad flora, or left to be consumed by the Wilds themselves.

Traditions & Rituals

  • The Rot Festivals: Seasonal rites that celebrate the cycle of decay and rebirth. The people of the Wilds offer organic sacrifices to ensure the land continues to thrive.
  • The Melding Trials: Warriors and hunters seeking to prove their strength must endure a ritual poisoning, surviving only if their bodies can merge with the Wilds’ parasitic flora. Those who fail either die or rise as something… changed.
  • The Whispered Feasts: Before a body is given to the land, its memories are harvested through arcane rituals, allowing the deceased’s knowledge to live on even as their flesh dissolves.
