Mawroot Vine

Mawroot Vines are a predatory, semi-mobile plant species native to the Withered Wilds of Noctavia, thriving in the land’s primordial balance of decay and regeneration. Known for their grasping tendrils, flesh-consuming roots, and unsettling resemblance to serpents or worms, they are both feared as a hazardous threat and revered as a vital participant in the forest’s death cycle.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Mawroot Vines appear as thick, sinewy vines—black-barked with streaks of sickly green and deep maroon. Each vine can stretch over 30 feet in length, covered in hooked barbs and tongue-like fronds. At intervals along the vine grow "maws"—toothed, flower-like orifices that open and close rhythmically, secreting digestive sap and exhaling faint, spore-laden mist.

When still, Mawroot Vines can be mistaken for twisted roots or decomposing plant matter, making them especially deadly to unsuspecting prey.

Ecology and Habitats

Mawroot Vines are symbiotic with Corpse Blossoms, often growing in overlapping territories. They prefer areas with:

  • Soft, corpse-rich soil.
  • Shaded, spore-dense canopy.
  • Proximity to decaying organic material or battlefields.

Mawroot root systems form vast underground "gravespires"—dense tangles of root and rotted matter that can reach dozens of feet deep. Within these chambers, some believe the plants grow sapient cores or even birth more dangerous variants.

Behaviour

Mawroot Vines are semi-sentient, possessing rudimentary predatory instinct and tactile awareness. They hunt by:

  • Detecting vibrations in the ground or air.
  • Releasing a pheromonal lure that mimics the scent of blood or rot.
  • Striking suddenly from under the soil or canopy.
  • Constriction and digestion: ensnared prey is drawn toward the vine’s central maw and slowly broken down.

Larger vine clusters are capable of dragging prey underground, feeding not only the vine but the mycorrhizal death-web it’s connected to beneath the forest floor.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Despite their danger, Mawroot Vines are harvested by death druids, alchemists, and necromancers for unique properties:

  • Vine Resin: Used to bind undead flesh or create death-channeling staffs.
  • Digestive Mucus: Potent for corpse preparation or softening enchanted bone.
  • Spinehooks: Barbs used in traps, cursed arrows, or as ritual components.

Civilization and Culture

Common Myths and Legends

  • The Forest’s Tongue: Some claim the Mawroots are how the Withered Wilds itself “feeds”, devouring the unworthy and recycling their essence.
  • Mourners’ Chains: In old rites, graveyards were ringed with Mawroot seedlings to ensure the dead “would not walk.”
  • The Hungering Root: A legend tells of Mawroots growing large enough to pull down entire caravans, feeding for months.
