Bonebloom Fields

The Bonebloom Fields stretch across a haunting expanse of the Thornshroud Dominion, just beyond the outer coils of the Thornveil Forest. These fields are the agricultural and alchemical lifeblood of King Daerion Blackthorn’s kingdom—a place where death is not merely accepted, but cultivated.

Here, crops bloom from bones, fungi fatten on buried souls, and harvests pulse with necrotic power. Life and death are not opposites here—they are partners in propagation.

Geography

  • The fields are wide and open, but perpetually gray, the skies overcast and the ground blanketed in a thin veil of ashen mist.
  • Instead of soil, the land is made of a dark loam laced with bone fragments, shards of iron, and twisting necrotic roots.
  • Scarecrows woven from corpses and thorn-twine stand watch over the land—not to frighten birds, but to ward off spirits that might disturb the balance.

Fauna & Flora

The Bonebloom Fields produce no common crops—only necrotic cultivars, strange hybrids, and plants with alchemical value. Key species include:

  • Corpse Blossoms: Broad-petaled flowers that feed on cadaveric nutrients and bloom only when nearby death has occurred. Used in embalming elixirs and soul-binding tinctures.
  • Mawroot Vines: Fast-growing parasitic plants that strangle dead trees and feed off the spiritual residue in corpses.
  • Soulbulbs: Bioluminescent fungi that glow with trapped remnants of lifeforce; when distilled, they create a potent magical reagent.
  • Wraithstalk Grain: Black-stemmed, silver-sheathed grain that causes vivid dreams or hallucinations when brewed or baked, often used by necrotic seers.
  • Ashcorn Vines: Twisted, nut-bearing plants that absorb ambient necrotic energy and are often harvested for oil, fuel, and poisons.

Defenses & Dangers:

  • Trespassers often vanish among the crops, only to return days later as flowering cadavers or wailing husks.
  • Blightbeasts, twisted plant-animal hybrids, prowl the periphery and respond violently to intrusion.
  • The fields are warded by bone totems and living thorns, all of which are bound to the will of the Thornshroud’s necrotic grovekeepers.

Natural Resources

  • Alchemists and necromancers across the Noctavian Empire covet ingredients from the Bonebloom Fields.
  • The produce is used in everything from necrotic rituals to defensive wards, healing draughts for undead, and dream-steeped teas for Withered Elf oracles.
  • The fields also supply magical sustenance for the Thornshroud’s undead legions—an alchemical ichor derived from crops that mimics the warmth of blood and the taste of memory.

Labor and Cultivation:

  • The fields are tended by a combination of enslaved thralls, bound undead, and necrotic druids, each serving a purpose in the cycle.
  • Harvest rites are conducted monthly beneath the Bone Moon, with bloodletting and chants to ensure a bountiful return.
  • Fleshfertilization is common—bodies are ritualistically buried or broken down in special ossuaries before being spread across the fields.

History

  • Many believe the Bonebloom Fields to be alive in a collective sense—a single, pulsing necrotic organism, with every root and vine linked through the soil.
  • Whisperers and druids claim to commune with the fields, hearing the murmurs of dead gods or lost souls carried on the fungal wind.
