Bonebank

The Bonebank is a vast, sunken necropolis within the heart of the Mire of Unmaking, where the water thickens into a dark slurry of rot, silt, and forgotten bones. Hidden beneath layers of cursed muck and necromantic current lies a mass grave of immense scale—thousands of bodies: warriors, beasts, sacrifices, and unfortunates drawn into the mire’s embrace over centuries.

Purpose / Function

  • Reservoir of the Dead: The Bonebank is a strategic resource for the Thornshroud Dominion. Its depths hold a ready-made army of the Mireborn—waiting, dormant, and tethered to the will of the forest’s masters.
  • Ritual Catalyst: Great necrotic rites often draw power from the Bonebank. By channeling death-energy from its depths, Thornshroud seers can perform continent-shaking spells or awaken ancient horrors.
  • Memorial of Ruin: Some believe the Bonebank whispers in dreams—offering forgotten memories or bargains to those who wade too deep.

Defenses

  • Shifting Bog-Cradle: The Bonebank is not fixed. The landscape churns slowly as mirewaters rise and recede. Sometimes bone-laden islands surface like bloated corpses, then vanish beneath the ooze within days.
  • Tide of Skulls: During magical surges or dark rituals, bones drift upward en masse, forming floating lattices of ribs, femurs, and vertebrae that bob on the water’s surface before sinking again.
  • Totem-Spikes: Thornshroud druids drive rune-inscribed stakes into the mire to mark graves of power. These act as necromantic lighthouses—controlling which dead may rise and where.

Dangers and Superstitions

  • Bone Leeches: Parasitic worms that feed on spiritual residue. They implant themselves in the living, sapping willpower and spreading fevered dreams of the drowned dead.
  • Drowned Echoes: Spectral remnants rise on moonless nights, reenacting their deaths in ghastly pantomimes. These echoes can possess or lash out at intruders.
  • The Waiting Maw: Rumors persist of a titanic skeletal beast buried at the Bonebank’s deepest point—a guardian or punishment awaiting command.

Tourism

To the Thornshroud Dominion, the Bonebank is not merely a mass grave—it is ancestral memory, military cache, and sacred offering site. Sacrifices made here are seen as feeding the forest’s soul, while rising from the Bonebank is regarded as the highest honor among necrotic faithful.

“When we die, the Bonebank will hold us. When we rise, the forest will guide us.”
