The Black Veins
The Black Veins are a massive subterranean complex beneath the Noctavian Empire, a sprawling system of caverns, industrial arteries, and necro-mechanical workshops. Hidden deep beneath the Obsidian Wastes and bleeding into the underbelly of Curdemire, the Black Veins serve as the Empire’s most secretive and sacrificial engine—the pulsing heart of its necromantic industry and arcane engineering.
This colossal labyrinth is a fusion of natural cavern systems, ancient dwarven delving, and modern Imperial expansions, repurposed into a grim fusion of factory, laboratory, and prison.
Geography
- The Pulse-Furnace:
A massive heart-shaped soulforge in the deepest shaft of the Veins. It glows with a dull, rhythmic beat as it devours soul after soul to power the surface cities and the Bleeding Spire. - The Echo-Chambers:
Sealed tunnels where failed experiments or rebellious constructs are exiled. Their pained howls reverberate endlessly—serving as both punishment and warning. - The Crucible Gutter:
Where the impure remnants of soulforging are drained—a black, bubbling river of wasted essence and spiritual sludge. Some believe it breeds life of its own. - The Umbral Forge:
A legendary chamber rumored to create “living weapons”—blades that scream, guns that bleed, and armor that feeds off the soul of its wearer.
Ecosystem
- Soulforges:
Central to the Black Veins are the soulforges—hellish furnaces that transmute stolen souls into raw magical energy or bind them into constructs, weapons, or machinery. These soulforges glow with eerie blue and violet fire, powered by captured spirits and fed with necrotic silver and soul ice. - Necro-Engine Chambers:
Vast halls where the Empire's Necro-Engineers craft undead war machines, soul-bound armor, and sentient siege constructs. These monstrous creations are half corpse, half machine, and fully loyal to the Empress’s will. - Machinery Halls:
Endless echoing corridors of gears, conveyor chains, and piston-driven systems. The heat and steam here are near-unbearable. Mechanists and enslaved workers toil endlessly to maintain production quotas. - Corpse Recyclers & Bone Looms:
Chambers where cadavers are stripped, sorted, and repurposed. Bones are reforged into spears, sinew becomes wire, and skulls become components for command nodes in automaton minds.
Fauna & Flora
- Imperial Mechanists:
Elite engineers and tinkerers loyal to the Empire, specializing in soul-channeling engines, necro-fusion, and infernal circuitry. - Necro-Engineers:
Alchemists of death, trained in both spellwork and machinery. They craft horrors from flesh and metal, imbuing them with fragments of sentience. - Soulshackled Laborers:
Condemned criminals, political dissidents, and debtors forced to labor in the Black Veins, often with soul-binding collars or partially lobotomized minds. - Constructed Sentinels:
Undead machines—silent, efficient, and loyal. These guardians never sleep and patrol the Veins relentlessly.
The Black Veins are a myth to most citizens of Noctavia, whispered about in taverns and used as threats to frighten children. To those who know the truth, they are the engine of empire, a hidden horror necessary for the dominion of Malvera Noctara to endure.
Tourism
The Black Veins are tightly guarded. Entry requires sanctioned access from the Bleeding Spire. Those caught spying or deserting their post are fed to the soulforges or flayed into component parts for experimentation.
Whispers suggest that even the Empress herself visits the deeper chambers, conducting rituals to preserve her immortality or commune with ancient entities beneath the Veins.
