Noctavia

Noctavia, often called the Shadowed Lands, is a vast and varied continent characterized by stark contrasts in climate and terrain. From the frozen wastes of the north to the steaming jungles of the south, the land seems to shift in mood as much as in landscape—haunted by deep magic and often marked by unnatural weather patterns or otherworldly phenomena. Its geography is both beautiful and dangerous, shaped by millennia of elemental upheaval and mystical transformation.

Geography

Northern Reach – The Iceshard Glacier

A sprawling dominion of ice, snow, and jagged tundra, the Iceshard Glacier dominates the northern third of the continent. This glacial region stretches endlessly toward the pole and is riddled with:

  • Crevasses and frozen ridgelines, hiding subglacial rivers and ancient ruins.
  • Icy cliffs and fjords, carved by the slow grinding of ancient ice.
  • Permafrost plains, dotted with strange mineral spires and whispering winds. Blizzards are near-constant here, and the sky is often filled with eerie auroras that ripple like ghost-fire.

Western Coast – Wetlands, Forests, and Southern Savannahs

The western coastline is dominated by a series of wetlands and brackish marshes, fed by countless rivers winding down from the central highlands. This area transitions southward into:

  • Temperate Rainforests, where moss-laden trees tower high, and the air hums with moisture.
  • Grassy floodplains, where thick reeds and tangled brush create mazes along the rivers.
  • The Southwest, where the forest thins into savannahs and golden plains, home to migrating beasts, scattered oases, and stone monoliths half-swallowed by the land.

Thunderstorms roll inland from the sea here, and the terrain grows wild and humid during certain seasons.

Southern Coast – Tropical Rainforest

Lush, humid, and bursting with life—and death—the southern coast of Noctavia is a dense tropical rainforest that stretches for miles inland before giving way to drier land. Features include:

  • Towering canopy trees, strangler vines, and poisonous flowers.
  • Sweltering heat, broken by torrential rains and sudden monsoons.
  • Hidden ravines and bioluminescent fungi that light the jungle floor by night. This region teems with exotic flora and fauna—some beautiful, some deadly, all touched by the deep magic of the land.

The Withered Forest

Covering a vast interior swath of Noctavia, the Withered Forest is a sprawling expanse of twisted, dead, and dying trees, rotting fens, and blackened undergrowth. Unlike natural decay, this forest seems cursed—a blight spreading slowly over the land. It includes:

  • Bleached tree husks, some petrified, others hollowed by strange parasitic mosses.
  • Silent clearings, where even insects refuse to tread.
  • Decay pools, slow-churning swamps that exude strange fumes and erode sanity. The sky above the Withered Forest is often clouded or unnaturally dim, even at midday.

Emberfall and the Badlands

At the heart of Noctavia lies Emberfall Volcano, a looming, still-active volcano that has birthed a sprawling region of rocky badlands, obsidian fields, and molten fissures. Known as Emberfall, this area is defined by:

  • Cracked, dry terrain, warm to the touch and sometimes glowing from beneath.
  • Ash storms and firewinds, scouring the land unpredictably.
  • Lava tubes and scorched caverns, some leading to underground river systems. The land here is harsh, hostile, and beautiful in its devastation. Emberfall is feared and respected across Noctavia.

Eastern Coast – Lakefront Forest and Grasslands

The eastern coastline is gentler, cooled and nourished by a large inland lake that buffers the surrounding lands with mild weather. This unique region supports:

  • Temperate deciduous forests, with maples, oaks, and fruit-bearing trees.
  • Rolling grasslands, dotted with wildflowers and standing stones.
  • Freshwater marshes, rich in herbs and migratory birdlife. Though smaller than the other biomes, this area is uniquely fertile and often seen as a place of balance and rare serenity in an otherwise unforgiving continent.
