Maurie Belaroth

Duchess Maurie Belaroth

"Treason begets treason, always keep your word!"
Maurie Belaroth was duchess of Ciello from 859, when her mother died young, until her death in 928. Her reign was long and varied.   During her childhood the rule of Ciello fell to her father Aitor de Vendra who served as regent. However, rumors that he had poisoned his wive in order to take power were rampant. Traditionally the regents on Ciello step aside once the heir reaches the age of 15. However, in 969 Aitor attempted to convince the regency council to extend his reign past this limit. First arguing that the Myzian practice (where regents reign until the heir is 18) should be adopted, then that Maurie was mentally incapable. When the regency council appeared hesitant Maurie made her move. She had secret conversations with the Marquess de Madruzzo, the Marquess de Varano and the Count of Aldershal, who also sat on the regency council. At the next meeting of the council the young duchess marched into the room, backed by knight provided by the Marquesses and proclaimed the arrest of her father on suspicion of having poisoned her mother. She also proclaimed the end of the regency. The council confirmed these acts and dissolved itself. Later Aitor was found guilty of all charges. However, Maurie proclaimed that since it would be sinful for a daughter to kill her father she would spare him. Aitor was sentenced to live the rest of his life as a monk of the Order of Serenity. He was confined to a monastery on the island of Pacel off the eastern coast of Ciello, where he remained until his death in 904 IC.   During the 880s Maurie sent troops to Khandar to aid the kingdom of Quataba, with which Ciello had an alliance. At the time the Mahdyan tribes were sweeping north out of their mountain homeland in their attempt to subjugate all Khandar. The expedition was a failure and many of the Ciellan troops were killed. Ciello did score a victory at sea, in the battle of the Straits of Hama, where two Mahdyan princes died.   In 890 the Counts of Aldershall mounted their last rebellion until the Union War more than a century later. The Counts attempted to blockade the passes southwards while simultaneously besieging Reddingfield. In response Maurice concluded a treaty with the Evonian Republic allowing her troops to be ferried to Reddingfield to aid in the city's defense. Seeing the entry of Republic and Ciellan ships into the harbour of Reddingfield the count of Aldershall sued for peace, which was accepted by the duchess.   In 927 IC the Republic called on Ciello to honour its alliance and participate in what became known as the Great Northern War. Despite vocal opposition from her son Maurie agreed to participate on the Republic's side. In 928 Maurie personally accompanied a fleet carrying an army to Myzia. A storm separated the transports from most of the escorting warships. The transports and remaining escorts were then discovered by a Myzian fleet, which proceeded to sink or capture nearly the entire fleet. Maurie died when her ship was sunk.
