Union War

"By majority vote of this, the seven-hundredth and ninety-first parliament of these Free Cities; we proclaim an eternal Union. Together we stand, united. No longer will these lands be the playground of foreign Powers!"
— General Taurus' "proclamation of Union", the casus belli of the war.
The Union war is the latest unification war in the Free Cities. The war began in the year 1000, with an attempt by a number of cities to force the creation of union of all the Free Cities, during the parliament of that year. The attempt failed. Cities opposed to the Union proclaimed an Alliance to "protect the traditional freedom and inderpendence of the cities". The Union aligned itself with the Myzian Empire to the North, while the Alliance appealed to the Evonian Republic for aid.

The Conflict

Prelude

Ever since the Kingdom of the Isls collapsed in the 4th century there have been those who have sought to reunite it. Others have worked tirelessly to prevent such an event.    In the years leading up to the turn of the millenium the cities increasingly became the site of Great Power rivalries. To the north of the Free Cities the Myzian Empire grew ever closer to its goal of reuniting the former lands of the Imperium . Territories which includes the Free Cities. To the south the power of Khandar grew, and out west the Evonian Republic sought to prevent the growth of its rivals. With no central authority, and a thousand ambitious rulers the Free Cities became the playground for their power-games.    Some cities sought to unify their strenght in response. During the latter part of the 10th century these cities entered a loose union and made efforts to bring other cities into their fold. Over time they aligned themselves with the Myzian Empire to counteract the Evonian Republic, which sought to prevent the unification of the Cities.   In 1000 the union cities called a parliament and attempted to coerce the remaining cities to join their cause. An ill-judged attempt to capture the leaders of the reticent cities failed.   The Union proclaimed that the Union included all cities, and that the holdouts were rebels. Those opposed to a union proclaimed that a Union of cities was incompatible with the traditional liberties of the islanders. They proclaimed an Alliance to dissolve the Union, and restore the rights of the Cities.
