Second Siege of Callimno

In the early years of the Union War the Union had the advantage. They initiated a major drive to subdue the Duchy of Ciello. A united army was landed on the island to accomplish this goal. However, Ciello is easily defensible; while the farmlands are insufficient to support large mobile armies for very long. The Union's task was not made easier by the Barrier Fortresses on the island. All of whom were occupied by the duke's forces. The Union's army first target was the Citadel of Reddingfield. However, since the army was commanded by the Count de Aldershall and had a large component of his troops within it the townspeople refused to allow the army entry to the city. Instead the army proceeded south towards the fortress of Callimno, which they then besieged.   The siege dragged on, and the army's supply situation deteriorated. The fortress proved impossible to take by storm, and so the army was forced to starve the defenders out. Unlike the fortress at Reddingfield, Callimno did not have the supplies to withstand a long siege. After nearly a year the defenders surrendered, and the fortress was turned over to the count. However, the idea of continuing the campaign and besiege Cunaris was now out of the question. The army had suffered terribly during the siege. Supplies were insufficient to confront the Duke. A strong garrison was left at Callimno, and the remnants of the army withdrew towards Aldershall.   The war carried on. By 1010 IC The Alliance was ressurgent. The Duke led his forces north; supported by a significant mercenary component he lay siege to Callimno, intending to expell the garrison. Four years later the siege continues. However, many now say it is only a matter of time before the exhausted garrison gives up hope of relief. When that happens the duke will move north to finally deal with his rebellious subjects.
