Duke Emeric Belaroth
"Life has a way of testing a man's principles."
Emeric Belaroth was duke of Ciello from 928 until his death in 962. He was famed for his piety and devotion to duty, which led to tensions with his more liberal mother.
In 927 IC the
Great Northern War broke out, and Ciello was compelled to enter the war on the side of the
Evonian Republic and her allies. At the time Emeric was merely the heir. He argued with his
mother that it would be wrong for the Ciellans to fight on behalf of the "heathen elves" against the great champions of SOl, the
Myzian Empire but his demand that Ciello stay neutral was not heard. In protest the lord went into self imposed exile, contemplating entering a monastic order and deny his inheritance.
However, in 928 his mother was killed at sea when Myzian warships intercepted a Ciellan convoy. Emeric became duke and out of duty to his mother carried on the war to its conclusion in 936. During this time Ciello incurred significant debt to banks in the Republic.
In 937 the duke began what became his great project: the construction of a huge temple to Sol the Peacemaker in Ciello. The temple was finished by his son in 970 IC.
He married
Yesinia "of Azuelae" in 934. The Duke had been visiting
Azuelae on a diplomatic mission since 933, and there had conducted an affair with the famed actress, which resulted in pregnancy. To avoid scandal and preserve his reputation as a devout follower of
Sol the Duke married Yesinia in a hastily arranged ceremony before the pregnancy could become publicly known.
