Eureka

Eureka is a political and religious organisation with members all across Acate. They focus on controlling areas through religious reasoning and military force. The organisation is lead by several Admins that the leader Marielle has personal connections with and has deemed trustworthy enough to lead smaller sections of followers. Each past and present Admin has also been an Awakened, just to increase the power of her personal army.

Marielle

Marielle
by Drake
Main Article: Marielle

Also Known As: The Boss, Big Boss, Boss-Lady, The Great Larvate, Masked One, Marquess

The founder and current head of Eureka, Marielle is the one in charge of directing her organisation. Her commands are followed by her Admins by the letter, otherwise they aren't just removed from Eureka, they're made into one of the many masks she wears. No member of Eureka has survived crossing Marielle, and members consider doing so an act of insanity or idiocy (or both).

Marielle is also the head of her own cult, which is also called Eureka. The political and religious Eurekas are incredibly difficult to separate, if it is even possible. She preys on the weak and poor, promising that through her they will find salvation through 'good works'.

Rachel Rose

Main Article: Rachel Rose

Also Known As: The Rose's Thorn, The Black Queen, The Lustless Tyrant

While growing ever further from Marielle and her cronies, Rachel still associates with the group and goes out on missions that seem beneficial for the both of them. Rachel is a pirate captain and the mayor of the Anchorage of Red Sands, specialising in quick transport and trade deals. She's feared far and wide across the ocean, so much so that even the mention of one of her names sends ships back to port.

Lady Luck

Main Article: Lady Luck

Also Known As: Blessed Youth, Guardian Angel, Divine Providence

Often seen as one of, if not the nicest Admins of Eureka, Lady Luck is a young girl with the ability to decide if an event occurs in a certain order or if it happens at all. She can also decide the result of a random encounter, like the number that appears on a rolled die or a card chosen from a deck. She's tasked with keeping other Admins safe on their journeys and spreading the good word of Marielle's teachings.

Viro

Main Article: Viro

Also Known As: N/A

Viro was saved by Marielle and feels obligated to stay with her and help her, even though he doesn't agree with what she does. He knows that she's a liar, even to her Admins, but his sense of loyalty and pride keeps him within Eureka. Viro specialises in silent assassinations and is often used by Marielle to take out political opponents.

His Awakened ability allows him to erase the space between two points for a moment of time, allowing him to catch up to people running away. He's also able to make objects vanish into a pocket dimension no one has access to. He's rather quiet, much like the angsty teenager he is.

Cruor

Main Article: Cruor

Also Known As: Emissary of Ethami, The Bloodletter

A man also saved by Marielle, he traded his life of relatively minor crimes for a chance at something bigger. He became Awakened because of Marielle and was given surgery that ultimately changed his life forever. He follows his boss without question, hoping that one day he'll be able to rule over people by himself.

Cruor has the ability to control blood itself, as well as empower or weaken Awakened's abilities with this control. With this, he can bring previously useless abilities into a powerful weapon, or raise already deadly abilities to city-destroying levels.

Lahatiel

Lahatiel (Without Wings) by Drake
Main Article: Lahatiel

Also Known As: Marquess' Commissionaire, The Silent Crusade, Almighty Adversary

The only non-Awakened admin of Eureka, and the only one without direct subordinates. An angel of Panahon, Marielle created him in an experiment and kept him around due to his incredible power. It seems that Lahatiel has no mind of his own, and only does exactly as he is told, as if he were a machine.

Lahatiel has the ability to channel heat and fire through his weapons, usually being given a glaive as a weapon of choice due to its long range. He is terrifyingly quick, being able to fly much faster than horses can run, as well as incredibly strong, being able to wrestle said horse with little effort. He also has the ability to heal others and create light shows, which, while pretty, can also serve to blind his foes.

Barry

Main Article: Barry

Also Known As: Barrie, Bury, Berry

A salaryman from before the First Age, and the first Awakened to likely ever exist. Looks unremarkable to everyone. He is immune to time-based magics, and is in his own state of "Groundhog Day", where he practises the same routine each day with no deviation until something disrupts that pattern. Barry is Marielle's personal salaryman, doing all of her important paperwork for her.

Past Members

Eidolon

A wiry woman and a religious fanatic who followed Marielle in the Third Era. She was an Awakened with the ability to make people cling to their past and disregard anything in the present as real. She was the one who attacked Anchorage of Red Sands with her lackeys, resulting in the Massacre of Anchorage. Marielle 'rewarded' Eidolon's successful mission by killing her and making her into a mask.

Eureka as a Religious Organisation

Worship

Worship is often done in forums, churches, or places of congregation. Worshippers are expected to tithe physically (through labour and exercise), spiritually (through daily prayer and the keeping of tokens on their person), and monetarily (by making home-offerings and tithing).

Physical Worship

Every follower is expected to work for a living. Small children are expected to help with harvests and planting or help with chores at home. Old folk and disabled people are expected to find an artistic hobby to enrich the masses. Working people can pursue any kind of career they desire, so long as they remain helpful to society.

Exercise is also mandated by the religion, to make sure those that aren't in labour-heavy jobs stay fit and active. While children, old persons, and the disabled aren't exempt from this, they are held to a much lower standard, and do as much exercise as they feasibly can handle.

Spiritual Worship

When followers are converted into the faith, they are given a pendant with Eureka's emblem on it, and are expected to keep such a token on them at all times if they want to be taken seriously by others of the faith. It's customary to give children these after they learn how to say Marielle's name properly and are tied around their wrists, only removed for bath times.

People often decorate them by putting new chords or chains on them, or adding charms or beads, but they always keep the original pendant as a reminder of when they began to follow Marielle. When someone loses theirs, it's considered a big deal and a result as a lack of faith. Though there are artists that make beautiful renditions of the emblem, it'll forever be known to others that they lost their original.

Any time one finishes bathing or is about to sleep, prayers are offered up to Marielle. Prayers often include well-wishes to Marielle and what she wants to achieve, praising Marielle for what she has already achieved, thanking her for her influence on their lives, asking for help with something, and closing with either 'May I be ever clean in your eyes' or 'May I rest easy knowing you watch over me', depending on the reason of daily prayer.

Prayer is also offered up in thanksgiving over special events like births, weddings, funerals, holidays, festivals, family or community gatherings, ceremonial ship launchings, and the construction of a new piece of infrastructure. These prayers are often more freeform, and offer thanks to Marielle for watching over them and allowing them to carry on their mundane lives.

Monetary Worship

Home-offerings, a tie between offerings for Laika and Marielle, are offerings typically made of baked goods and a fresh, sweetened drink left on an altar or the hearth to invite Marielle into their home and allow her to watch over the inhabitants. The food and drink is left there for three days or until it is about to spoil, and then is ceremoniously burned in the hearth and poured into a special drain into the earth located within the home.

Other species or tribes offer different objects, like seared vegetables, a finely woven piece of cloth, thaumite dust, or a written song. All are cast into the hearth's fire, and if there is no hearth or fire, a fire is made specifically for this purpose.

A portion of all money made is presented to special clergy known as tithekeepers, who work as a sort of tax collector. Tithes work similarly to taxes, where a tithekeeper will assess what a family owns and what they make, then assign a value they think would be appropriate for them to pay every month. Most tithekeepers are fair and impartial, but some are ruthless and overcharge those they take care over. Tithings are given directly back to Marielle to do as she pleases with.

Tenets

While the tenets may vary from place to place, species to ethnicity, these are all relatively the same across the board.

Devotion to Marielle is the only way to achieve inner peace

No other god promises or can promise inner peace to their subjects. By doing as The Great Larvate asks, people become closer to her perfection and undying greatness, and become at peace with themselves since they know what they do is great.

Marielle holds the key to eternal life

Marielle has proven she can never die, and can heal others that prove their faith. Through following and sharing her teachings, anyone can attain a healthful or even eternal life. Even those who die when in her service are granted a place of eternal rest and happiness.

Salvation is earned through faith and works

Not only do followers have to believe in Marielle and that what she does is true, they also have to conduct themselves in a manner befitting a follower of Marielle. Faith is important, because without it, works are meaningless. Works are important, because without them, faith isn't proven.

All gods other than Marielle are false

In a world with hundreds of cult deities, many claim to know a 'true' god, but Marielle has proven herself to be more powerful and greater in every way than any cult god. Major Deities haven't ever been truly seen in the flesh, and don't respond to when called upon, so they cannot be relied upon like Marielle can.

Faith in Marielle will provide

No matter how destitute or broken one becomes, faith and works with intent can always save a dying soul. Giving coin when there isn't any left to feasibly give will always result in more riches coming their way. Emotions and bodies can always be healed with a bit of self sacrifice, and working for the progress of one's community will ensure that the community will always be there for one another.
