Barry

Barry looked up from his desk to face the party. "Hm? Can I assist you folk with anything? I'm a little busy at the moment." He set his pen down and straightened his slightly hunched posture.   Mozni spoke up first. "You're gonna answer for your crimes, Barry!"   Barry furrowed his brow in confusion. In these situations, Marielle had told him to put everything he was working on into a bag he kept on his person, so that's what he did. Quickly, but with error, he shoved all papers on his desk into his vest. The party stared at him as he did this, a bit shocked at his response.   Zkirax buzzed angrily. "We have to arrest him before he does something strange! Quick!" He rushed over, knocking down the man with his broadsword.   Barry did nothing but raise his hands to protect himself and offer a surrender, knowing he'd done all he could to protect Marielle's important documents. It didn't matter if they killed him now.

Barry is a human of unknown heritage that lives in Keiman City as an admin of Eureka.

History

Barry was around for the impact of the meteor and the horrible havoc it caused on the surface of the planet, causing incredible devastation. He survived, though barely, with a few of the people from his city. He hid beneath the surface for a while until the weather settled down from the cataclysmic impact, and when he emerged, the world was a completely different landscape than to what he remembered.

He aided those around him with constructing settlements, but as a pencil-pusher of what was now yesteryear, he wasn't really able to find much of a place in this now very active, outdoorsy society. Nevertheless, he tried his best, and worked well as a tailor for a short time, until he met a nice young lady whom he fell in love with and soon married. They had two children together and worked hard on their fledgling town with the other townsfolk.

Barry decided to go on a vacation with his family to a beautiful port town they had heard stories of. They all took a caravan, and on the way, Barry took a nap, knowing it'd be a while before they would make a stop. When he awoke, he woke up in his bed at home, and to an empty house, no less. He asked the townsfolk about his wife and kids, and they in turn asked him why he wasn't with them in the trading caravan. He was confused, but just kept at his work the best he could, not having any more money with which to hire a trading caravan for transport.

Supplies came into the town in small amounts, and caravans entering the town were few and far between. There was barely enough food for everyone to be fed, but Barry survived nevertheless. After a few weeks of this, caravans came in more frequently, with news surrounding a strange occurrence where the land itself was swallowing up people and caravans, chewing them up, and spitting out what it didn't want. While this was insane to think about, the many accounts of such a thing happening made it impossible to ignore as a possibility. No matter how long Barry waited, his wife and children never returned, and he eventually held a private service mourning their loss.

One day, while he was working on an order for a quilt that would be a part of the mayor's bed (which he would be paid handsomely for), he received a visit from a masked woman in dark garb who introduced herself as Marielle. She told him of what the mayor was doing and his injustice to the people of Keiman Town. Barry simply replied that he didn't care, the words slipping out of his mouth without a second thought.

This confused Marielle, as those who she had rallied against the mayor already didn't like him or his policies. She told him about those that were starving in the slums, the families without proper housing and medical care, and he repeated to her that he didn't care, and that he had a job to fulfil. She was offended and taken aback, and asked him if she gave him a job to do, would he do it. Barry said after his task was finished and if he was compensated fairly.

Thus started his employment under Marielle, where she found out that he was a fantastic bookkeeper and a mediocre tailor, and employed him as her personal secretary when she became mayor of Keiman Town. It wasn't until she noticed after a handful of years that Barry hadn't aged a day since they had met she realised he must be either undead, much as she, or a mystical Awakened.

Barry, to this day, lives in the same house and in the same city as he always has. He (typically) has the same routine day in and day out, only moving from it if Marielle asks him to or if something disrupts him out of his daze.

Barry has been a constant throughout Acate's entire lifespan, and is said to be some deep, primordial being that is tied with the health of the planet itself. In this vein, he has a very small but very devoted following that stalks him and uses his signs of life to try to divine the future of life on the planet and natural disasters that might happen.
