Rachel Rose

The Most Feared Pirate of the Sea

"Tsk, as if you could help me? I am the most feared pirate captain on the whole of Acate, mayor over a small but prosperous city, an administrator of Eureka, and you think you could help me!?" Rachel scoffed.

Tara looked around her. "Your crew is gone, your city decimated, and Eureka in chaos. I think we could at least try."

Rachel lowered her brow and said nothing. Maybe this youngling had a point.
Rachel Rose is a human pirate queen, an ex-admin of Eureka, and is currently travelling alongside Tara and her friends. She seeks to find out who destroyed her port-town and get revenge.

History

Young Vigilante

Rachel was raised as a respectful little girl, but she had the awful tendency of running away from home and playing with poor kids in the streets of Anchorage. Even though she was a part of a well-to-do upper class family, she learned a lot about the struggles of the lower class and often gave others anything she didn't explicitly need.

Doing this drew the ire of her parents and got her and her parents shunned at family gatherings. While she was scolded and got many strikes across the face, especially as a teen, her parents eventually gave up on trying to keep her from seeing her lower-class friends.

As a kid, her peers gave her the moniker Bis-queen, in reference to the fictional vigilante Bis who would steal from the rich and dismantle power structures, giving power to the disenfranchised. Rachel often would steal from family members when she could and give what she found to her poorer friends, let alone re-gift anything she got as a present. Eventually her family caught on and stopped bringing her places and giving her expensive gifts.

A Pirate Queen is Born

As she grew into being an adult, her parents commissioned a large ship to be made to replace the few transport vessels that had been lost in a recent failed trade mission. The Iron's Anger was finished a year later, and Rachel and her friends fell in love with the majesty of it. They'd never seen such a large boat in their lives (having only seen small fishing boats and much smaller trading vessels before), and Rachel knew that she had to have it. She'd climb aboard any time she could, learning everything about her, and studying what everything did.

Her parents, finally happy their daughter wanted to go into something worthwhile compared to petty thievery, fully indulged her interest after finding her sneaking aboard one night. While they weren't very enthused about her choice of crew, they helped her by hiring some more crew mates and sending her off on more simple trade missions along the coast. Her friends encouraged her into more illegal affairs, but she kept things legal for the longest time. These successful trade missions boosted her popularity even more, especially among the middle and upper class, and Rachel was able to become the mayor of her small town.

Joining Eureka

Marielle, very aware of this growing threat, wished to get this powerful individual on her side before she ended up with The Iron's Anger at her port. She sent a letter through Lady Luck, inviting Rachel to meet her in a small encampment outside of Anchorage to have a little chat. Rachel decided to go and have a sit-down chat with the lady herself.

While Rachel was a large fan of Laika, she didn't have much of an issue converting to Eureka. Marielle promised her that if Rachel did as she was told, endless prosperity would become of her and her settlement. All Rachel had to do was expand her trade goods to include thaumite and to give 50% of what she gathered to Eureka. Needless to say, Rachel took her up on this offer.

Leaving Eureka

For a while, things were great. Rachel began to spend more trade goods and currency on thaumite so that Anchorage would be more prosperous, and Marielle sent trading caravans to bestow upon the populace new technologies. Simple mechanisms that improved everyday life like proper cooking equipment, high-quality garments that changed the fashion in Anchorage, and the introduction of Points rather than the Ortheian Gold piece made it easier to trade with each other and fed the poorest of the poor.

However, demands became more frequent and more extreme, and Rachel began to question if the choice she had made was the proper one. Charge harsher prices for impoverished cities. Eliminate smaller settlements and raid their goods. Flat out killing and robbing the corpses was different than Rachel's origins as a petty thief, and it made her uncomfortable. So, simply, she stopped listening. She stopped raiding and offered better prices, but the damage to her reputation had been done. Everyone feared The Iron's Anger, and everyone but the people at home in Anchorage feared Rachel Rose as a result.

Rachel brought these fears to the attention of Marielle, who told her to embrace the fear of others and use it to her advantage. While Rachel did for a time, she went back to trying to trade fairly, but the Ortheian Kingdom blacklisted her from their ports entirely.

One fateful day, Rachel came back to the Anchorage of Red Sands to find that her town had left without her. Some buildings had burned to the ground, and corpses littered the streets. Ghosts and trapped souls lingered in the streets and in their homes, and they lashed out at her. She had no idea what had happened, and sent a letter to Marielle asking where her protection had been whilst she'd been gone, to which she got no response.

Physical Description

Rachel is a tall woman, standing around 5'10" and towering over women her age. While older, she is quite fit and healthy despite that fact. Her face is imperfect and sun-touched compared to her relatively pale skin with wrinkles around her mouth and eyes. She has long, slightly wavy, rich brown hair with a few greys streaking it.

Rachel dresses much as a sea-faring captain of her sort would, with a large hat with a feather in it and a long leather coat with her ship's iconography on the back. Her heeled boots she wears gives her an extra inch of height and are laced tightly. A leather belt is strung across her waist with two ornate scimitars hanging from it.

Personality Description

Rachel Rose is an intimidating woman when one looks at her, but she is genuinely kindhearted. She often gives up whatever she doesn't need to charity and helps those down on their luck by giving them opportunities. While people tend not to want to talk with her because of the threatening aura she puts off, once they do it feels as if a wall has been broken down.

Rachel is easily manipulated if someone threatens something she holds dear to her and backs up their claim, doing things against her morals when she feels she has no other choice. She feels family is important, community even moreso, and that personal possessions, while not inherently valuable by themselves, are important by helping ensure survival through their use.

Quirks and Oddities

Rachel has a habit of staying quiet for long periods of time, even in the middle of active conversations. In fast-paced group conversation she often falls behind, not being included at all unless someone specifically asks her a question. She's not one to interject in the middle of someone saying something, and will stop speaking when someone interrupts her. Because of this, her friends and crew know better than to interrupt her and often try to include her in conversations in an attempt to get her to participate.

Awakened Abilities

When the Errant Edge consumed her, she faced and battled the demons of perceived sin that plagued her mind. When she Awakened, she found she could summon these shadowy creatures, having gained mastery over her own sins.

Shadow Creature Creation

In order to manifest a shadow creature, Rachel must think about a wrong she committed against someone and feel a negative emotion because of it. Once she is consumed by the emotion, she must think about any being or creature she's seen at one point or another and imagine pushing the emotional energy out of her. When she does this, a shadow creature is created nearby her.

The shadow creatures she creates are made of a dark material that reflects no light. These creatures follow her orders but otherwise behave as normal creatures would of the type she created. They can carry items, attack enemies, activate devices, or communicate (so long as it is within their ability to do so naturally). They exist until they sustain enough damage to kill a normal creature of their species or Rachel wilfully dismisses them, wherein the emotional energy goes back to Rachel for her to feel once more.

Religious Views

Rachel was raised with the worship of the Five Deities in mind, but she fell to love Laika, the god of hospitality and community, most of all. She clung to the little teachings she could find and applied them to her life at a young age. She spoke with many who worshipped cult-gods, and found them odd but not abhorrent as many in her family and community did. She didn't understand them and their worship, but she respected them where she could. In her adolescence, she tried to convert others and had religious arguments, but she grew out of it once she found that she lost friends that way instead of gaining them.

When it comes to Marielle and Eureka, she assumed that Marielle was her own cult-god. Very few cult-gods were sentient, so she thought, but accepted it as a valid religion for a long while. When she realised Marielle was an amoral nutcase (in her own words), she found her religion a horrible cult that thousands bought into, which made her worry about the future of Acate in general.

Wealth

Rachel, now, has only The Iron Anger and the few belongings she kept with her at the time of her departure to her name. The Massacre at Anchorage left her without a home or a true community to be a part of.
