The Old Dark woods

Thousands upon thousands of square miles of dense forest separate Balgrendia from nearly all the rest of the known world. The woodland has many names: the Forest of Woe, the Torturewood, the Black Woods, and several others besides, but most just call it the Old Dark Wood, or more simply, the Forest. A place largely untouched by humans, it exists much as it has since the dawn of the world. The forest covers about nine-tenths of Balgrendia’s lands, making most of the kingdom extremely difficult to traverse. For centuries, would-be invaders would be forced to stop their advances when they realized the futility of any attack on Balgrendia. Although the forest offers Balgrendians considerable protections by dint of its size and nature, most avoid exploring its depths because of all the horrors that dwell beneath its canopy. Boggles, horned devils, Oni, tortured spirits, and the usual suspects of demonic influences all make their home here and feed on all manner of prey, particularly those foolish enough not to avoid the forest in the first place.
