Session 55 - Maximus Impact

General Summary

  Maximus Merilander of House Merilander came to pay the Saviors of Sandpoint a visit. Or so they thought.   It was not just Maximus. There were two of them, along with animated suits of armour. They attacked, with their focus on Jayvielle. When both casters were slain, their bodies turned to snow and quickly melted. Quilith suspected they were simulacrums of Maximus.   Shortly after combat ended, another Maximus arrived on the scene. He also did not show up alone. He brought a feebleminded Kendra Deverin with him. He claimed to be delivering a message for the original Maximus. If Jayvielle did not abandon his search for Xaliasa, Kendra's fate – or worse – would befall other family members.   Quilith healed Kendra and dispelled the feeblemind effect. Mite then collapsed. Truett examined him and discovered that prolonged use of Arcaine, along with some other personal experimentation, was having some effect on him. He was weak, but stable. Shayliss agreed to put him to bed and watch him.   Kendra composed herself and went to the town hall with Jayvielle, Quilith, and Kilgor, to remove the temporary mayor of Sandpoint – Titus Scarnetti. The meeting was tense yet civil. Titus acknowledged that Maximus had come to see him and asked about Jayvielle. Titus mentioned that the mayor was Jayvielle's cousin, and Maximus left. Titus stated that what he did wasn't against the law and that anyone in town would have given the same information. He also pointed out that since Maximus was still alive, as was Jayvielle, the situation wasn't resolved, and Deverin could easily be abducted again. Titus said that once Maximus or Jayvielle was dead, he didn't care which, he would go with Kendra to the Sandpoint Mercantile League. They could vote her back in if they chose to do so.   Veiled threats were levied. Titus pointed out that a group calling themselves the Saviors of Sandpoint they were much more of a threat to the people of Sandpoint. Their reckless battle with Lord Blackmoor resulted in the death of Titus' two sons, his wife, and his aunt. Now the mayor was being abducted and returned on a whim, without any fear of repercussion. Scarnetti then dismissed them as he had a town to run. Grudgingly, they left.   Kumiko went to visit Brodert Quink. She showed him the evidence she had gathered, showing that he was right about the Old Light being a Thassalonian superweapon. She told him about Mokmurian's library, and he demanded to see it himself. Brodert appeared in the library with one teleport spell and was happier than Kumiko had ever seen him.   After sending Kendra Deverin back to Haven Manor to rest, Jayvielle noticed the Maximus simulacrum casting spells around town, looking for Xaliasa. Maximus saw them and cautiously approached, telling the heroes he didn't want to stay in town any longer than necessary. He then cast silent image and asked if they had seen anyone who resembled the image they saw. Kilgor recognized him as the "vampire" owner of the magic shop in Magnimar, Echo. Maximus asked where he had seen him, and Kilgor shrugged. "In the city," was all he divulged.   Maximus told him that if Kilgor would identify the location, "they" could leave. Jayvielle asked who else was with him. Maximus hesitated before admitting that an associate of Maximus Prime, Jubadeem, had brought him to town and was staying at the Rusty Dragon until Maximus Sim returned to him.   Jayvielle told Maximus to take a lap. He and the boys were going to visit Jubadeem.
