Personal history
From a young age, Shayliss has suspected that her parents saw her sister Katrine as their favourite child and were ashamed of Shayliss. She sought their approval and attention, first by being kind, later by being scandalous, and never succeeded. After her sister was murdered, her father fell into depression, and Shayliss realized that her parents did not consider her their daughter.
One night, when she contemplated suicide on the bank of the Turandarok River, Shayliss tried working up the nerve by cutting her forearm. The blood fell into the water, and the river started to stir moments later. Shayliss entered the river and found the deceased body of Kaylee Jalstin, pinned beneath stones and tangled in weeds.
When Shayliss tried to free the body, something came out of the corpse and wrapped itself around Shayliss. This entity, an eidolon of Abadar, began communicating with Shayliss. It told her that Kaylee had been his host for many years, unbeknownst to her husband Ottman Jalstin. Together they had been trying to rid Sandpoint and Magnimar of the evils that threatened to devolve civilization into anarchy. The symbiote had been powerless when ghouls paralyzed Kaylee during the undead invasion. She was dragged into the water, and the ghouls fed on her.
Shayliss saw this as a second chance and a way to prove she was more than just the "unwanted Vinder girl." The symbiote joined with Shayliss and together they forged a new identity. Vaultbreaker was gone, and Vaulthunter was born. They would support each other and work together to accomplish a goal more prominent than both. Exhausted, Shayliss collapsed on the riverbank. She was found and brought to the manor owned by the Saviors of Sandpoint. The resident cleric, Truett, aided the girl and told her she could stay as long as she needed to.
Shayliss has turned the Haven manor into a base of operations. She aided Truett during his magical research and item creation. In return, she has food and a place to stay. Word was sent to her family that Shayliss was safe. Her mother, Solsta, seemed relieved but made no other attempt to contact her daughter.
