SearchWA -Search -FindAuthors FindWorlds FindArticles SearchCommunity FindPremier Discover DiscoverImprovements -DiscoverSearch
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
Right now, it is extremely difficult to locate other world authors, worlds, and articles in WA.
There is a DISCOVER button on my profile. :-)
There is an ARTICLE button on the DISCOVER pull down. :-)
It does NOT have a search function! It should! Why can I not search for an article there?
There is a WORLDS button under the DISCOVER button.
It does have a search function! (yea!) But it is only searchable by genre. And my world doesn't show up in any of my world's genres even though I just published articles in it yesterday. Why not? Why can I not search for a world by name there?
There is no AUTHORS Button at all under the DISCOVER button.
There should be! And it should have a search function! It should list the "Premier League" authors. It should be searchable by Guild Status, and it should be searchable by name.
It would be extremely helpful and create a better sense of community for everyone - people who have been around and newcomers to have a better WA level search function.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
It adds the ability to find people in the community through key ways you might remember them!
What are other uses for this feature request?
I think this could be implemented "generically" and reused, but I leave the design and coding to you...
Follow up
Ok folks - the writing on this suggestion was supposed to be playful and a bit silly, and I deliberately went out of my way to do that so it would not sound critical... I never put a happy face emoji or put in "yea!" asides in a communication unless it's supposed to be fun. I do admit to being passionately interested in this suggestion. I note since you don't like my tone that I did cap the button titles so you could follow as I wandered through the menus (though you didn't mention the caps). Caps do shout a lot so it might have influenced tone, but I wanted to make sure I was delineating the menus clearly.
So... on to "should". The world is a very big place, WA is a worldwide community, and we kinda have to give each other some grace because, as this interaction points out to me, even when we're speaking the same language, we often aren't, and no one has invented mind reading irl yet. The word "should" in the part of the world I come from is never a requirement, and is only a suggestion. It's never direction and it's super soft even as a suggestion. 90% of the time a statement that uses the term "should" is totally ignored. In short, I used the softest language I know intending to show you what people feel when they engage with the page - it seemed to me that walking you through the experience of the user would help you see where we logically expect functionality to live and what we expect it is going to be.
User interfaces are hard. In my experience, it's difficult when you do UI design to interact with an interface the way a user interacts with it - you're thinking about all the mechanisms you have to put in place and all the data you have to get the user to give you to implement the functions and making sure there's no holes in the implementation. I totally get that - which is why I walked it through the way I did - trying to be helpful, and (I thought) playful. You obviously don't have to do it the way I outlined - or even provide the specific features I proposed - it's a suggestion, but personally I find it more helpful to have people give me more feedback/info on the problems and possible solutions rather than less. It just makes the work easier to have a tangible starting place to think about the problem.
Not sure if this makes it better or increases understanding across the board, but I hope so. Thanks for at least reading this far.
I'm very happy that you decided to implement this feature - thank you! I think it will totally help make WA a better place to world build.
The Team's Response
Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. This has been accepted as part of a future community update.
We also wanted to take a minute to address the tone used in the suggestion. While we appreciate the passion you have for the community and wanting to discover what your fellow Anvilites are working on, the repeated use of "should" came across as forceful in our meeting. Remember that this board is for feature suggestions (which we are always super happy to read), not for the community to tell us what we should be doing instead. Thanks for understanding!
