Anvil-Coins Community Comments Articles Coins Likes
Concept and Function
Something I've wanted for a while is a way to encourage interaction on our worlds beyond liking an article. To this day, we rely on the good graces of those in this wonderful community to provide feedback and express interest in our work. This feature will both encourage others to interact with each other's work, and reward those who already make a point of doing so.
"Venus" is an enhancement to the World Anvil Coins feature, named to keep in line with WA's themes regarding new features and projects. This is done by allowing comments to receive likes, and earn a set number of Anvil Coins for each like. If commenting gives 5 coins, and every subsequent like provides an addition 5 coins, one is rewarded for their efforts without much in the way of "inflation."
The first major issue that comes to mind is the "economy" of the World Anvil Coin system. Would there be too many coins floating around to guarantee the integrity of voting, along with any future enhancements to what these coins can be used for? No.
Solutions to potential issues
As a sage, I gain 100 coins every day I log in, 700 a week, and around 3000 per month on average. That is a lot of coins, and this doesn't even include higher tiers of those who subscribe to WA as a service. This feature would require allowing coins to build up in free accounts, but it would take these accounts a tremendous amount of effort to build up the number of coins I make in a single day, just by logging on.
It would take a free account 20 comments, or 20 likes on what must be a damn good comment, to make the same amount of coins. They would need to do this every day to match what only a sage can get for next to nothing. It could easily be exploited. Find 20 articles, refuse to read it, throw a comment that says nothing more than "great work!" and, hey, 100 coins.
The problem here is, in a way, this isn't an exploit. It would be a waste of time overall, as the coins don't provide monetary gain, guarantee a response from those you comment on, or build hype around your world. It's exclusively a method for getting coins. Not to mention, those who are looking for these articles to comment on are doing exactly what the feature is designed to encourage. They are exposed to each other's worlds.
I would call this a solution without a problem, but one could make these coins optional by imposing a 25-50 minimum word count for the comment in order to qualify for coins.
This is self-regulating when it comes to coins being a guild-master feature. Voting can't be nearly as impacted by those whose accounts don't actively support World Anvil, but not so much that a free account is left with no means of accruing these coins and having a voice to be heard, as they do help support ad revenue. For further balance, if needed, guild-masters and above can still be the only ones allowed to suggest features to prevent the suggestion list from overcrowding.
Further Enhancement and Solutions
I know for a fact that there are many other ways of further enhancing what Venus already could do. Imagine, if T. J was so inclined, an exclusive badge reserved only for those who manage a certain number of comments and likes on their comments, either earned as an achievement, or exchanged for a set number of coins. Commenters such as Serukis certainly deserve that. (seriously, I see them EVERYWHERE)
Venus also has a hand in regulating challenges. World Anvil has always handled competitions based on the merit of entries, not the popularity of these entries. This is for the best, to be sure, but it does beg the question: "How do we find these articles?" The like system is the best answer for this. By making a shortlist based on likes, you theoretically have a sample of the best entries. In practice, as many in the community have expressed, there is no way to know for sure if this works.
I started WA in 2018, and since World Ember of that year, I have failed to make the shortlist of 1 competition (Dimitri's birthday competition in 2019) which I didn't have time to write an entry for. I'm not saying this to boast. This is actually very concerning. I know I'm not that good. This issue has been expressed many times by Barron, and Dimitris. I remember them mentioning how they so often see the same names at the top.
This could be because these names are truly the best, I mean I wish this was the case. They are certainly talented, but this is an incredibly talented community that gets better with every passing competition. This feature could level the playing field. Getting on the shortlist will be much easier as others will be actively looking for work to engage with in order to gain more coins.
Conclusion:
Article critique servers in discord didn't work, and are too much to maintain. Good graces are certainly present in this community, but there is no way to get eyes on your work without a major dose of luck. You have to post your work at the right time, in the right place, and this varies depending on where you post (twitter, reddit, discord, ETC.)
Venus could change this. I am astounded when people choose to interact with my work, and feel amazing when a comment I give is well-received, It further builds the love and commitment I have to this community. Venus would help further this, and encourage others to be a part of this community if they have reservations.
More than anything, the system works with no oversight. No moderators will be needed to make sure a comment fits the criteria of a discord server, exploitation would be a waste of time, and our lesser known peers can be recognized in a way that just isn't possible as is. It would further make World Anvil's community the best community on the internet.
Stay safe, and thank you for your time.
