Anvil-Coins Community Comments Articles Coins Likes

Concept and Function

Something I've wanted for a while is a way to encourage interaction on our worlds beyond liking an article. To this day, we rely on the good graces of those in this wonderful community to provide feedback and express interest in our work. This feature will both encourage others to interact with each other's work, and reward those who already make a point of doing so.   "Venus" is an enhancement to the World Anvil Coins feature, named to keep in line with WA's themes regarding new features and projects. This is done by allowing comments to receive likes, and earn a set number of Anvil Coins for each like. If commenting gives 5 coins, and every subsequent like provides an addition 5 coins, one is rewarded for their efforts without much in the way of "inflation."   The first major issue that comes to mind is the "economy" of the World Anvil Coin system. Would there be too many coins floating around to guarantee the integrity of voting, along with any future enhancements to what these coins can be used for? No.

Solutions to potential issues

As a sage, I gain 100 coins every day I log in, 700 a week, and around 3000 per month on average. That is a lot of coins, and this doesn't even include higher tiers of those who subscribe to WA as a service. This feature would require allowing coins to build up in free accounts, but it would take these accounts a tremendous amount of effort to build up the number of coins I make in a single day, just by logging on.   It would take a free account 20 comments, or 20 likes on what must be a damn good comment, to make the same amount of coins. They would need to do this every day to match what only a sage can get for next to nothing. It could easily be exploited. Find 20 articles, refuse to read it, throw a comment that says nothing more than "great work!" and, hey, 100 coins.   The problem here is, in a way, this isn't an exploit. It would be a waste of time overall, as the coins don't provide monetary gain, guarantee a response from those you comment on, or build hype around your world. It's exclusively a method for getting coins. Not to mention, those who are looking for these articles to comment on are doing exactly what the feature is designed to encourage. They are exposed to each other's worlds.

I would call this a solution without a problem, but one could make these coins optional by imposing a 25-50 minimum word count for the comment in order to qualify for coins.

This is self-regulating when it comes to coins being a guild-master feature. Voting can't be nearly as impacted by those whose accounts don't actively support World Anvil, but not so much that a free account is left with no means of accruing these coins and having a voice to be heard, as they do help support ad revenue. For further balance, if needed, guild-masters and above can still be the only ones allowed to suggest features to prevent the suggestion list from overcrowding.

Further Enhancement and Solutions

I know for a fact that there are many other ways of further enhancing what Venus already could do. Imagine, if T. J was so inclined, an exclusive badge reserved only for those who manage a certain number of comments and likes on their comments, either earned as an achievement, or exchanged for a set number of coins. Commenters such as Serukis certainly deserve that. (seriously, I see them EVERYWHERE)

Venus also has a hand in regulating challenges. World Anvil has always handled competitions based on the merit of entries, not the popularity of these entries. This is for the best, to be sure, but it does beg the question: "How do we find these articles?" The like system is the best answer for this. By making a shortlist based on likes, you theoretically have a sample of the best entries. In practice, as many in the community have expressed, there is no way to know for sure if this works.   I started WA in 2018, and since World Ember of that year, I have failed to make the shortlist of 1 competition (Dimitri's birthday competition in 2019) which I didn't have time to write an entry for. I'm not saying this to boast. This is actually very concerning. I know I'm not that good. This issue has been expressed many times by Barron, and Dimitris. I remember them mentioning how they so often see the same names at the top.   This could be because these names are truly the best, I mean I wish this was the case. They are certainly talented, but this is an incredibly talented community that gets better with every passing competition. This feature could level the playing field. Getting on the shortlist will be much easier as others will be actively looking for work to engage with in order to gain more coins.

Conclusion:

Article critique servers in discord didn't work, and are too much to maintain. Good graces are certainly present in this community, but there is no way to get eyes on your work without a major dose of luck. You have to post your work at the right time, in the right place, and this varies depending on where you post (twitter, reddit, discord, ETC.)   Venus could change this. I am astounded when people choose to interact with my work, and feel amazing when a comment I give is well-received, It further builds the love and commitment I have to this community. Venus would help further this, and encourage others to be a part of this community if they have reservations.   More than anything, the system works with no oversight. No moderators will be needed to make sure a comment fits the criteria of a discord server, exploitation would be a waste of time, and our lesser known peers can be recognized in a way that just isn't possible as is. It would further make World Anvil's community the best community on the internet.

Stay safe, and thank you for your time.

Other notes

Several of the suggestions here are already in the pipeline as part of the upcoming Community interaction and Achievements update   (Not a final reply, just a note) Removed "Venus" as the codename to reduce the chance of misunderstandings. Especially since the name is already taken by an upcoming project.

I use WorldAnvil to keep track of building my world, not to socially interact with other worlds. I do care about new features and being able to suggest things. If this was implemented my voice would be very diluted as I don't look at WorldAnvil as a social networking site. There are so many other venues for social networking and I would hate if WorldAnvil joined their ranks.

I like this idea, though I do see a problem some others have mentioned - those that are already known getting more comments, thus more coins. But it is a nice way, I think, of helping others spread the love.

I like this idea. Anything to help people and their articles get noticed, I think. I don't know how that would really help, as the already known people will just get more comments and likes. (Not to talk down on those!!) But as a Guild-Master I get 50 coins a day, and I already get more than I know what to do with. so commenting to collect more coins isn't I think I forsee.

I like the idea of incentivizing feedback, networking, and communication within WA. i am not sure if this is the way, as I can see both sides as I see the side that worries it could be abused, but perhaps a work around would be, if the coins are desired, there is a feedback box that requires all fields to be filled out: "What was inspiring about of the article?" "What could be imporved?" and this way, the word count could be met, it is optional, and it requires effort to get into in the first place.

I adore this idea. With anvilites like Dr. Serukis who work so hard to give feedback constantly simply out of the kindness of their hearts, it would be nice to see such hard work rewarded.

I too agree that we should help some of the lesser-known creators of WorldAnvil get noticed. As was mentioned by Toblin, I say we maybe shouldn't let Freemen use this feature so as to prevent the potential usage of Bots. (Granted, I'm sure there's a bunch of other things that should be considered with this, but I ain't a scientician)

In my opinion this will be too easily abused and reinforcing system that I don't think is necessary in the first place (coins).

This is a good idea. The accrual of coins could be weighted depending on the tier of subscription and / or each like could be worth a partial coin (e.g. 0.10 of a coin for shorter comments and 0.25 of a coin for longer comments. There could be a formula to figure this by multiplying tier by comment weight. Just a thought. :)

This definitely seems like it would be a wonderful feature! I often come across articles that I think are fantastic, but I know they probably won't see much interaction from others because the author of the article is new or relatively unknown on World Anvil. Hopefully this becomes a reality!

I think this would definitely help broaden the names showing up at the top of the competition lists.   My only concern is the possibility of bot farming.

AntimatterNuke put it in a way I find really agreeable, have it so the author of the article has to "Approve" the comment to have the system give the 5 coins. In addition, I think there should be a system in place that it gives you 15 (Maybe even 50) coins instead of the 5 if you put a comment on a world you have NEVER commented on before. This would boost people looking for new settings amazingly.   I might even say make Approved Commments give 10 coins and then New Setting Approved Comments give 60.

Could potentially and easily be abused by comment spam bots, or just lead to non bot coin farmers who comment without reading just for coins.

I think this is a very good idea provided we have the correct risk mitigation controls such as a minimum character limit of words to ensure the comments left are meaningful to avoid comment farming. We would also need a few members to act as moderators

I like the concept. I'm not too concerned with abuse (unless coins end up having some sort of monetary value or greater influence). I'd like to find a way to encourage commenting on articles that have not been viewed/commented on. I know I don't get many views, probably because I don't advertise. I was in one community ages ago that allowed a member to request critiques as a way of improving their work. Said articles were available in a separate list. Perhaps something like that could work.

I think this is a well-meaning, but horrible idea. Incentivizing comments in this way is the path to creating a bunch of comment farmers. I'd prefer to get a few comments from folks that actually cared enough to read something rather than to get dozens of comments from folks just passing through for their 5 coins.

I like the idea to reward interaction, but there really needs to be some mechanism to prevent abuse. Maybe getting a like on a comment could give you more coins than the act of posting it? However, we would also need some rules for who can like a comment - otherwise people could farm coins by having their bots/accomplices like every fake comment they post.

I tentatively support the idea of rewarding positive interaction, but allowing free accounts is a big no for me. Not because I don't think they deserve it, but for the same reason MMOs limit what free accounts can do: botting.   If you can set up a free account to bot and get coins without any investment, then all you you have created with this is an unending stream of spam.   No free accounts, and you have my support.

I like this idea, and share your concerns about the current likes-based shortlist system being too much of a popularity contest. If something like this was implemented, I'd want it to incentivize seeking out lesser-known worlds and worldbuilders, instead of most comments and activity clustering around the best-known settings.   Maybe points for commenting could be awarded only when the world author(s) approve the comment, preventing spam/low-effort comments, encouraging activity, and encouraging comments on less-known worlds whose authors may be more likely to take the time to read and approve every comment.   Or maybe the number of coins gained from comments is inversely proportional to the number of followers/comments in the world (or just comments in the article).
