After the fights with both the giant vultures and the guardsmen, the companions decided they needed a place to rest. They retreated about a mile away from the temple into the devastation and set up camp.Fulfalling 1
Making their way back to the temple grounds, the scouted outside the torn-down walls first, looking for breaks in the rubble. Finding a few passages in and out, they were again attacked by another flock of giant vultures. This time, the vultures were easily defeated. Interestingly, Crasock noticed that the remaining vultures took a less aggressive posture, but watched the party closely. They then tracked the patrol back to an old guard tower. The upper floors of the tower were destroyed, only the first level looked intact, and the doors looked to be sealed from the outside. Dark arrow slits showed no light from the interior. Suddenly, all went black for a moment and the companions saw the insides of the tower with over a dozen guards, a few peering out black curtains covering the insides of the arrow slits. Adrea just smiled and thanks the Goddess of the Night, Nox, for the flash of insight. Knowing they were against a significant force, the party retreated to the usk trees and gathered some of the poisonous fruit. The one that had nearly fallen on Elyot stunk badly when it exploded, making her nauseous. They waited behind one of the ruined outbuildings while Virion snuck up to the doors and examined them. He noted that the bars across the doors were faked, and found a mechanism for opening the doors from the outside. When Virion opened the doors, the other companions raced up to the opening. Crasokk and Balan threw the purple uskfruit into the breach, causing the guard defenders to back away from their defensive barricades just inside the doors. Once inside, Balan and Crasokk fought their way through the guards while Virion rushed in and engaged one of the guard sergeants. Elyot battered the unprepared guards with her mind sliver, causing the deaths of more than a few. Once the entrance was cleared, Adrea called upon the spirits of the night to punish her foes. Soon hastily dressed guards came out of one of the side rooms to join the battle, while Balan joined Virion, who was now facing the guard commander, several guards, as well as the sergeant. The battle was bloody, and the companions were gravely injured, but soon a hush settled over the tower and the guards all lay dead. The only sounds were the vultures hissing from above the rafters.
