Virion Presfaren Character in World of Arith | World Anvil

Virion Presfaren

Virion grew up in the central region of the Kingdom of Tuathwold along the edges of the deepest forest. Even by the Sylvan standards of isolation his clan was isolated more than most. They were a small enclave led by the great druidess Ariawyn. As a youth, Virion was plagued by nightmares where his village was consumed in some type of elemental cataclysm. When he spoke with Ariawyn about these dreams, she assured him that since the great war eons past against the primordials, (in which the Aesir and Vanir were victorious) elementals would never dare destroy an elf village.   At the age of 110 Virion traveled to the Rose Throne to claim his name and gender before Queen Tuatha and thus completed his ritual to adulthood. The evening after the ceremony Virion used the elf gate to return home. As he traveled through the dream-like state and neared dawn, he was ripped out of the trance and thrust in into a living nightmare. He arrived just as the elf gate collapsed and witnessed his village being swallowed by a huge fissure that had opened in the ground. As the fissure closed around what was left of his village and his family, he saw both earth and fire elementals cavorting in the destruction. Ariawyn had promised that something like this would never occur, so why had this happened? In a state of shock from literally seeing everyone he had ever cared for destroyed as well as the psychic trauma of being wrenched from the elf gate, Virion wandered the woods for days perhaps weeks, before regaining his senses.   Having no place to go, Virion continued to stay away from the rest of elven society and all society for that matter. For the next 2 decades he wandered the depths of the Tuathwold Forest, avoiding contact with others. Eventually his meanderings led him to Kellindeath and the eastern path to the wildlands.   While traveling through Kellindeath, Virion passed into the Shadowfell where he met and fell in love with a renegade drow named Syvis Xyrephine who, being unlike the other drow, was banished from her House and homeland. Over the next two years Syvis taught Virion about the energy that flows through living bodies (Ki) and the “Way of Shadow”. Syvis showed Virion that there are points in living bodies that when manipulated (pinched, poked, tapped, or hit) can inflict pain and damage with the subtlest of efforts. She taught him how to use throwing needles (darts/shuriken) that can kill silently when properly deployed.   They traveled together for the next year or so and though Virion was in love with Syvis, the drow being what they are, Syvis’ evil plan eventually came to fruition. Being so long lived, drow (end other elvish) schemes can play out over years or possibly decades. Syvis had taught Virion how to be an assassin and though the story is too long to tell here, got Virion to kill her twin sister. Syvis was now the only heir, set to become the next Matron Mother of House Xyrephine, and she could (relatively truthfully) claim innocence in the death of her sister. Once the deed was done, Syvis tried to kill Virion. But a well-placed darkness spell, his mask of the wild ability and his superior movement allowed Virion to escape.   Eventually Virion returned from the Shadowfell and entered back to Arith near Kellindeath and the eastern pass. He spent the next forty years traveling through the Wildlands living life away from society. By observing the behaviors of plants and animals he has learned how to bend like a reed in the wind (AC 17), glide like a leaf (Slow Fall) spring into action like rabbit (movement 45/step of the wind) and to be able to strike with the blinding quickness of a snake (Flurry of Blows).   Sadly, he has recently begun to have nightmares about elemental destruction again. This time however he has decided not to ignore them and has felt a pull to return to civilization and more specifically the Korlon Hills.   The only item of any real value that Virion possesses is a set of 10 mithril needles (darts/shuriken) that are concealed in the bracers he wears and that are easily accessible for use. He will try and retrieve them after use if possible.   While generally calm and unflappable, Virion harbors a hatred of drow and all the evil their society represents, and if given the chance would happily strike down Syvis and House Xyrephine.   Additions At some point during his life alone, he began having visions of elemental lords. After years of these visions, he realized that he understood the Primordial tongue, which few mortals ever master. He began receiving very specific visions. In the Korlon Hills, the very elements were being corrupted and manipulated. Engaging with his clan again after decades, he learned of a small village in the hills named Hillsboro. Although he had never been among humans or other races, except for a dwarven merchant or two. He felt the need to travel to this Hillsboro.
