Brightleaf 29
The next week was a blur, as Dworvic produced a plan for the first floor of the Outpost, the companions who cleared the outpost moved in, while the others stayed in Hillsboro. Maleon and Reynulf agree to bankroll about 3,000 gold of the construction in thanks for clearing the outpost and the donation of the weapons stored there. The only stipulation was that they be able to post some of their own men at the site. Since Dworvic's plans cost 4,000 gold, the companions would still owe 1,000 gold to Maleon and Reynulf.Brightleaf 30
After a week, the companions set out to the devastation, and the Temple of Chaos hidden somewhere within. It took them the better part of a day (seven hours) to cross Frogger's Moor before reaching the Emridys Run, little more than a stream this far upstream. Crasock discovered that the cultists were kind enough to place markers showing a dry path through the moor. Being the end of Brightleaf, the leaves on the trees had changed color and were beginning to fall. The colder weather seemed to keep and predators away, or maybe they had learned not to attack the path. After getting a bit wet crossing the Emridys, they party took a short rest to dry out before Crasock urged them on. About a mile past the Emirdys, the sounds of nature receded, the trees starting looking sickly, then dead. The dirt became ash-like. Crasock found tracks, easy to spot in the ash, of bugbears, gnolls, ogres and even a giant footprint or two. More disturbing, barefoot human footprints with claw-like nails. Following the trail wasn’t difficult, and another three miles into the devastation, they came across the collapsed outer walls of the Temple. Looking through the front gate, they caught their first look at the ominous cathedral. Atop the walls and the Temple rested vultures, hundreds of them. A small group of them broke off and flew towards the companions. Once they put some distance between them and the temple, something around them shimmered and they appeared to be giant-sized versions. These giant vultures then attacked, but were no match for the party. A few wounds, and the vultures lay dead near the ruined gates. As night began falling, the companions entered the temple grounds, moving to the east, they spotted, and were spotted by, a large guard detail obviously patrolling the grounds. The guards were led by two commanders, maybe a sergeant and the lieutenant. The battle was joined, and it was clear that this was no bandit troupe. They used practiced tactics, and the leaders were good at what they did. Still, though they managed to inflict some damage, they also fell to the companions.Crasokk
