Elyot Character in World of Arith | World Anvil

Elyot

Elyot was born in Brineven City, even from a young age, her intelligence was apparent, as was her shyness. She grew up in Dunbar Commons, the middle daughter of seven to her widower father; a bookbinder and an illuminator, who made a decent living. Elyot caught the attention of her father’s clients and earned herself a scholarship to Neldath University at an early age, leaving her family behind. It was here that she blossomed. She discovered that she had the spark of magic in her and sought to learn as much as she could about it; naturally the school of divination called to her. She worked her way through the University working in the library and delighted in helping researchers access the correct tomes and manuals.   As she approached graduation, both Archewood Hall and Maddaford College (home of the Prismatic Order and the Arcanum, respectively) approached her about further training, but she had also caught the eye of Arugal, an independent mage of note, who offered to mentor her and continue her training while staying at Neldath.   Arugal was a good mentor, and her magical abilities blossomed under his careful tutelage. She continued to work in the library and assist on research projects. The library of Neldath Hall had become a second home to her. She dropped using her surname, and began identifying more and more with the college and her studies.   A few months ago, a recent graduate, an adept named Selvar, began asking for books related to the elements and the elemental planes. Elyot helped him gather up a good collection, and placed them in a reading room he had reserved for the length of his research. Elyot was woken up the next night, horrified, the library was on fire.   Racing to her second home, she used her magic and skill alongside many others to put out the flames and save the collection. While racing through the stacks. Elyot came upon Brethil the librarian, wounded, with a dagger through his abdomen. As they waited for help, Brethil said that it was Selvar who attacked the library. When Brethil found him gathering the books Elyot had put aside for him, Selvar stabbed him and then started casting fire spells around the library, escaping in the mayhem.   With the help of Arugal, Elyot discovered that Selvar had traveled north, into the Korlon Hills. The Korlon Hills have always been known as a place to go to disappear. Some oddity of magic makes long-range divinations unreliable in the hills, and through the centuries, many would-be tyrants, warlords, assassins and mages used the hills to hide from those who would seek justice.   Never one to go off unprepared, Elyot researched the Korlons. The research spoke of a region filled with fallen fortresses, bolt-holes, dungeons and lairs. This is where mages went to practice their craft in secret. While the capture of Selvar and the return of his stolen books is one of Elyot's goals, her research has awakened something in her. There are secrets in the Korlons, half-forgotten and unknown lore just waiting to be uncovered or rediscovered. She gathered up her things, and in what is probably the most impetuous thing she's ever done, set off to the village of Hillsboro. Here she may just uncover great things.   And there's also a nagging question. Why did Selvar want all of those books on the elements and the elemental planes?
