Clockmaker Character in Villain Academy | World Anvil

Clockmaker

A brilliant inventor and engineer turned corporate CEO turned supervillain, Clockmaker is considered by many to be a walking example of how capitalism tends to create villains... and how rich have a propensity for evil. None of this true - Clockmaker's fall from grace has little to do with her family background and wealth, and has more to do with her having a few screws loose since birth.   Clockmaker has managed to avoid being incarcerated for several years despite being considered one of priority targets for even heroes like Mindscape, proving her surprise degree of situational awareness and a buddling mastermind potential. Today she's one of the most vehement supporters of the VIllain Alliance of America that for her is a practically ideal market for her inventions.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Physically, she is strong. Much stronger than she appears. This is partially due to years spent carrying large mechanical objects around her workshop and partially due to illegal and cutting-edge mechanical improvements to her body. She is at least partially cyborgized (something considered barely possible by the world at large and only a thing due to her genius), although she does her best to make the modification invisible from the outside.   What is known is that thanks to access to certain body-altering individuality, she modified her entire skeleton structure into that of hyperresistant nanocomposites, rendering her superhumanly durable, and capable of shrugging of a lot of punishment. Her skin was also largely replaced with one offering improved resistance to shrapnels and 'conventional' fire'. Those are merely the biggest changes.   A number of burn scars or just scars throughout her body - you can't repeatedly 'almost' blew yourself up in childhood and not get some.

Special abilities

Officially her individuality is Zoom, which makes her eyes appear crosshair-shaped and capable of zooming into to objects five kilometres away for perfect eyesight - or zoom in to act as a microscope. This is, however, a sham - she has replaced her eyes with handmade cybernetic implants in order to pretend that she possesses an individuality so that she would 'fit-in' better in her school life. She was sixteen at the time.   Unofficially, she DOES possess an individuality. She calls it the Akashic Records. It fires out periodically, filling her with an intense, absolutely overbearing desire to create something, while making her instantly capable of understanding all the underlying mechanisms and scientific principle. This includes even things considered impossible by modern science, a fact that greatly benefitted her self-cybernetization process.   The 'understanding' vanishes once the creative process is concluded, and while it's 'on', she is too focused to be able to speak or write down what she (temporarily) knows, and she appears to be temporarily invulnerable to mind-altering individualities and drugs (the latter do not alter her mental state, the former tend to backfire against their users). Regardless of that, she has managed to achieve a technological level beyond the rest of the world by reverse engineering and understanding her own inventions.   She has limited control of the Akashic Records. She can narrow down her next creative fit target, but there is always a risk of not making exactly what she wanted or how she wanted.

Apparel & Accessories

Is normally wearing a black business suit with a tie carrying a logo of the Halworth Industries, and a set of sunglasses. They are all severely modified, with suit alone being able to shrug a lot of bullets despite being lightweight. The array of equipment she is carrying on herself together with her cybernetization and training make her a surprisingly dangerous combatant and short to medium range.

Specialized Equipment

Too much to count. Includes things such as a tie with a partially sewn it special thread that she can pull out and use as a garotte, a hair pin that when pressed properly changes into a armor-penetrating explosives, a suit collar filled with nanomachines that, if needed, expand into a miniature gasmask, and so on.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Clockmaker was born to the family behind the industrial conglomerate of Halworth Industries (back then a legally existing and more or less morally upright corporation). She has quickly proved herself to be a brilliant if rather unhinged inventor, often found tinkering with things in her personal workshop completely naked (due to getting a gust of inspiration while in the middle of changing or during the bath - and dropping absolutely everything to focus on her work) and causing a number of explosions purely out of 'I want to see what happens if I do X'.   Once her parents grew tired (and worried about her eventually killing herself accidentally) they handed her to a large hero school in the Reclaimed States, hoping that attending their engineering course would smooth her out (and give her some social skills). To a degree, it did, although she remained a loner with a propensity for mad ideas and severe lack of peers to even remotely approach her level.   During her third year in the school, she ended up meeting and somewhat befriending Revenant, who was a freshman at the heroics course of the school. The subsequent attack on the school and his expulsion greatly contributed to her eventual mental break, together with death of her parents in a car crash few months later that left her at least a theoretical CEO of the Halworth Industries.   She proved to be surprisingly efficient at that job, quickly proving to the board that she is capable of being a CEO despite her young age (and frequent 'erratic' behaviour). She was actually interested in it the whole time, in fact, taking proper 'management' and 'public relations' classes at the hero school she was in alongside of wreaking havoc through its engineering workshops. Except, she was no longer interested in heroism as a whole.   No one knows exactly what was the actual trigger for her fall from grace. Perhaps she was never truly interested in working by the rules? Perhaps her individuality (the true one) is influenced by her emotional states... and she ended up giving into it, beginning to produce more and more terrible creations? Perhaps she was just bored of the world she lived in and decided to set it on fire? The world might never know.   Halworth Industries was soon outed as a major supplier of equipment to the People's Liberation Front. It's CEO knew that it was coming. By that time, the handful of likely-minded people she let into the corporation siphoned out a lot of production equipment, materials and design blueprints before majority of their facilities were blown up to prevent the government from seizing what was left of their assets.   HI moved underground and began a major supplier of domestically produced equipment and weapons. Torture equipment? Gas weapons? Customized guns? The Halworth Industries provides... for as long as you're a villain. Despite numerous attempts at locating her and despite numerous underground factories of the Halworth Industries being busted by the heroes, the HI continued to exist until Revenant and Clockmaker reunited, the latter (and her organization) becoming the official logistical and supply support framework of the Villain Alliance of America.

Sexuality

Appears to consider robots to be superior to organic liveforms.

Intellectual Characteristics

Utterly unhinged engineering genius with few to equal her (probably in the entire history of Mankind), something that's further enhanced by her individuality. Even without it she is highly intelligent, enough to act as very successful CEO in spite of her young age and limited experience. Her ability to avoid arrest (despite becoming a target of even top level masterminds) has also proved that she can be cunning and precise when erasing evidence of her activities is involved.

Morality & Philosophy

Utterly remorseless, with an almost sociopathic approach to her inventions. She doesn't care what they are used for, for as long as they perform accordingly to her guarantees. She would - and, in fact, did - create gas weaponry for large scale acts of terror with absolutely zero remorse. In her eyes, she is merely creating things, not being interested at all at what they are being used for by her clients.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Strenghts
Probably the most brilliant (if utterly unhinged) engineer, capable of producing vast amounts of cutting-edge weapons, armors and equipment as a whole. Unpredictable combatant, capable of dishing out a lot of damage thanks to her cybernetic enhancements and equipment. Skilled in negotiations, handling money and organizing work within a factory.

Weaknesses
Despite her improvements and equipment, she falls short of Top Heroes in terms of combat skills, and will struggle against stronger superheroes. Her creative fits are unpredictable and can throw a wrench into her operation planning, not to mention making her pathetically easy to arrest as she can't defend herself while under her individuality. They can also produce not quite what she expected, making a lot of her 'masterworked' goods not quite as useful as she hoped.
